can you figure it out (no pun intended)?

The slope of the hypotenuse of the two triangular pieces is not the same. You can see the slight angle change in hypotenuse of the encompassing triangle if you eyeball down the line. On the top the encompassing triangles hypotenuse creates a convex angle, on the bottom a concave angle, which accounts for the one square change in the area.

Clear?
