Leading US critics have questioned whether Hollywood is yet ready to give its biggest prize to a gay love story after the race drama Crash grabbed the Best Picture Oscar at the 78th Academy Awards last night.
Brokeback Mountain, the story of unfulfilled love between two gay cowboys that was nominated in eight categories, had been the runaway favourite for the award after cleaning up in the Golden Globes and Baftas.
But although it won three Oscars, including the Best Director award for the Taiwanese Ang Lee, the year's most talked-about film ended up losing on the final prize of the night.
"Perhaps the truth really is, Americans dont want cowboys to be gay," said Larry McMurtry, the veteran Western writer who shared the award for best adapted screenplay.

If Hollywood brings back the old-style westerns where Men are Men, people might actually watch their films.

Rules were (apparently) broken.
The Academy Award must go to the biggest gay movie of the year. It is unconscionable to give the award to a non-gay movie.
Or something like that.

Perhaps the truth really is, Americans dont want cowboys to be gay No sh*t, Sherlock. This is a direct attack on masculinity. It doesn't get any more blatant than that. I will never EVER watch this damn movie.

Based on the revenues Brokeback has generated, it appears this is just a bad movie, and no one wants to see it. It had a great first weekend, and attendance has been dropping off ever since.

If Hollywood brings back the old-style westerns where Men are Men, people might actually watch their films.Only if Hollyweird also dispenses with the gratuitous sex and language (so-called "realism" leaving nothing to what's left of the underdeveloped imagination).
In other words, it'll never happen.

I have read just about everything Larry McMurtry has written and am extremely disappointed in him for BROKEBACK. And to say this statement is patently obvious is an understatement! Gee Larry, you think????!!!

And that has WHAT to do with the Oscars? If the Oscars had anything at all to do with what Americans want and don't want, then the nominees for "Best Picture" would have included a better selection than "Crash" plus four stinkers that almost nobody in America even saw.

Perhaps the truth really is, Larry McMurty is too stupid to know the difference between a cowboy and a sheep herder.....
Perhaps the truth really is, Americans aren't all as stupid and politically correct as Hollyweird wants them to be........ but wait, the voters for these fiascos are members of the great "Academy" not Americans at large.....
so..... Perhaps the truth really is, even Hollyweird is not all as vapid and politically correct as the activists and frauds like McMurty try to make it appear.....
