Breast milk is definitely best for babies, up to a point. Unfortunately, in being rich in the nutrients that a newborn needs, it does not contain the nutrients toddlers and older need.

Children who continue to breastfeed after 18 months become what pediatricians call "milk babies." They usually have very poor bone structure and are at risk for impaired mental development and poor infection resistance.

They are usually identified during an ER visit for inability to throw off a cold or flu that other children are getting over in 4-6 weeks.

Remember, breast feeding after 18 months is not about the child. It's all about Mommy feeling "fulfilled."

oh,, good grief. my children were breast-fed beyond 18 months, and they are all sturdy-boned, bright, and disease-resistant - I can count on two hands the occasions I had to take them to the doctor for an illness (there are four of them.)

Taking 4-6 weeks for a kid to get over a cold/flu doesn't sound healthy to me.
