Officer Killed in N.J. Plunge Remembered

Incense burned as monks clad in yellow robes performed a Buddhist ceremony Saturday for a police officer killed when his vehicle plunged from an open drawbridge.

Officers Robert Nguyen, 30, and Shawn Carson died after their truck fell 45 feet from the fog-shrouded drawbridge into the Hackensack River on the night of Dec. 25. Divers found Carson's body about 90 minutes after the accident. They found Nguyen five days later....

Nguyen's fellow officers recalled a youthful-looking man who once spent two hours on the Lincoln Highway Bridge successfully talking a suicidal person out of jumping.

"He was known as Yoda," said Officer Alex Rivera, who knew Nguyen for 20 years and had played youth football and baseball with him. "He was using Jedi mind tricks and telling the person they didn't want to jump."
