Apart from myth, it's not all that hard to imagine many rogue planets cruising through space, looking for another sun to take them under their wing after their own sun disappeared.

I'd be pretty surprised if you are wrong. My view about the asteroid bits and pieces (apparently quite a lot of it) which are in orbits out of the ecliptic is that they may be primordial, and what we call the ecliptic got that way because of captures of passing bodies, including the one we live on. :')
