At least that's the word I got from the friend of someone who knows someone in the WH who knows.
Okay, I realize this is not a great source -- so please go easy -- but it does sound plausible and a great way for the White House to honor Rosa Parks, an authentic african-american heroine, by nominating Janice Rogers Brown as the first african-american woman to the Supreme Court.
Rosa Parks lived a very long life. It would be inappropriate to exploit a tragedy like 9/11 that involved the sudden violent murder of innocents taken in their prime of life, but that is not the case here. This would be more a way to honor her time on this earth.
I completely agree. I'd like to see the President nominate JRB, but there should be no mention of Rosa Parks in conjunction with this nomination. It would be seen as nothing less than exploitation of the death of an American hero.
Plus as ticked as W must be on the Libby slime job, I am sure he has no qualms about tormenting the self-imporant waste of DNA that inhabits todays Press rooms. One of the lads fault don't you know, overdeveloped sense of justice.

Well sure it would be, but if you can get the person in there that is well-qualified, WHY the hell NOT?
"We" need to get past even caring what the Dems like or don't like and they can either get on the train or get off, I really don't care. What I care about is the direction this country has been heading for far too long and want this President to take steps to right the ship.
This worshipping of JRB is getting to be a little too much for me. She is an impressive woman, but come on .... are we going to have to start using the term "Brownbot" around here? 'Cause, I mean .... the support for Bush that got criticized doesn't hold a candle to some of this stuff! ;-)

Any complaint I would have would be only because I don't think she can be confirmed. Otherwise, I'd have no problem with it as long as he didn't utter an explicit connection to Parks.
I was skeptical at the nomination of Justice Thomas, because I figured Bush was just looking for a black man, first and foremost.
I still think he was just looking for a black man, but I can't say I'm displeased with the result in that case.
I agree and even if she had been qualified, I was concerned that Miers was too old. If we had three more openings on the Court I might feel differently, but since it's not imminent.. we need someone young and VERY bright.
If JRB is the nominee, the announcement will come after the burial.
I think Bush is too good a man to use the death of an old woman as a political opportunity. He may well nominate JRB, but I doubt he will try too hard to link her nomination to Park's life or death.
Yours: Does this person seem at all more interested in things SCOTUS than Ms. Miers? (hint: this is a rhetorical question)

Continuing the buzz that emerged on Friday, there is a lot of talk in the newspapers and the blogosphere about Sam Alito and Michael Luttig as the two front-runners for a SCOTUS nomination. The blogosphere buzz around these two folks is especially interesting over at confirmthem and this post at UTR; Lyle Denniston here at SCOTUSblog suggests we might be getting a nominee within the next 24 hours.
Article 3 Groupie speculates that all the Alito buzz may be a head fake on the way to a Luttig nomination. But I have a different theory: Could all the Alito and Luttig buzz be a misdirection on the way to the nomination of Janice Rogers Brown?
This article reports that President Bush "and First Lady Laura Bush were scheduled to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony this evening honoring late civil rights activist Rosa Parks." Wouldn't it be an incredible moment of political theater and strategy to announce the SCOTUS nomination of Brown at this event? The President could describe Brown as the judicial equivalent of Rosa Parks, and framing the nomination in such terms would, I think, greatly impact the political dynamics and debate surrounding this nomination.

Oh I think Republicans would get behind JRB to get her confirmed. There may be a bloody fight ... but I think we can win it! And she is well worth the fight!
Tree, I didn't say today. I said Monday (tomorrow). But like some of those here, I agree Monday might not be the best timing for such an announcement of anyone for SC Justice, especially Janice Rogers Brown -- it does seem a bit tacky. Her announcement on Monday is just what I heard.
But Tuesday would be just fine by me. The point is that if Bush was going to nominate JRB anyway, what's wrong with using the occasion of the announcement as a way to honor Rosa Park and her legacy at the same time?
I'd love it!!!
