Babies Found In Air Shaft Lead To Arrests, Incest Allegation

The teenage mother suspected of disposing of two newborns down an air shift in her West New York apartment was likely an incest victim, authorities said.

The 18-year-old girl's father was charged Thursday with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.

Authorities were awaiting results of DNA tests.

His daughter was charged as a juvenile with murder and as an adult with attempted murder.

Tenants heard a baby's cries on Tuesday.

Authorities have accused the high school junior of throwing her newborn son out a third-story window into an air shaft on Tuesday. The baby survived after falling on a trash pile.

When investigators returned the next day, they found the remains of a baby girl that they believe died at least a year ago, when the woman was 17.

The Associated Press is not identifying the girl or her father because of the sexual assault allegation.

Why is incestuous sexual assault not a capital crime? One of the other stories said that the father (if we can even call him that) faced prison time of only ten to twenty years on the most serious charge. He clearly drove his own daughter to insane and murderous acts, and helped cause the death of another daughter/granddaughter. Acts like these reverberate through generations, whether the assailant is caught or not. He should be hung in that air shaft until dead, dead, dead.

Prayers for this very dysfunctional family and victims. What a mess

I'm wondering why this girl (both a victim of incest and murderer of her first child and almost the second) now 18, is not being tried as an adult for murdering her 1st child last year when she was 17. I see she is being charged as an adult for the attempted murder of the 2nd child but not the murder of the first.

BTW: there is a safe haven law in NJ, no questions asked.

I often wonder how frequently innocent newborn babies were dumped in trash incinerators throughout America. Remember, before the 1980's most apartment buildings and housing projects incinerated their garbage on premises. Each floor had a shaft for garbage which was subsequently burned in the basement a couple times a week.

Outrageous! I have it on the very best of authority that it's perfectly OK for a 25 YO teacher to be doin' the horizontal mamba with a 17 YO student.

His daughter was charged as a juvenile with murder and as an adult with attempted murder.
It's not murder. It's just a post-natal abortion. I don't see why these anti-choice prudes are getting upset. Nothing to see, here: move along.

The safe haven laws are a nice idea, but totally unworkable. The only way they can protect a mother who doesn't want to be found, is if it is absolutely prohibited to make any attempt to locate or identify the mother. Which would be fine, except that then you'd get a lot of babies that someone OTHER than the mother doesn't want (like the father who sees 18 years of child support payments looming, or the man who sees a prison term for statutory rape or incest looming), getting dropped off without the mother's consent, and then no one could investigate that possibility.

So if a young couple have a baby, and mom, after a fight with the father of the baby and in a drug induced fog dumps junior off at the FD, the guy has no recourse?

This is one of the many possible scenarios that cause me to conclude that the whole concept of "safe havens" where mothers can drop off unwanted babies "no questions asked", is unworkable. Even most young and/or poorly educated mothers can figure out that most likely, someone WILL try to locate her and ask questions, including who the father is and whether he may want the baby (and with DNA testing, may well be able to trace the baby to HER, if the father turns up and volunteers to be tested in an effort to find the baby). So if she really wants to be rid of the baby, she just tosses it in a dumpster or some other location where it won't survive and is unlikely to be found. So if a girl has decided that for whatever reason, she urgently doesn't want to be found and/or doesn't want the father to be identified (voluntarily or otherwise), she'd better skip the "safe haven" and just finish the baby off. There are no easy answers to difficult problems. The "safe haven" laws are an attempt at an easy answer, but have been almost totally ineffective.

Gosh, all she had to do was go to planned parenthood, and they would have disposed of the babies legally.

Throw a baby down an air shaft=illegal

Suck a baby down a drain=legal...IF abortionist gets the money.

The children must be remembered, and the murderers brought to justice.
