"Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans"
Louis Armstrong

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?
And miss it each night and day?
I know I'm not wrong... this feeling's gettin' stronger the longer, I stay away …

Miss them moss covered vines...the tall sugar pines,
Where mockin' birds used to sing …
And I'd like to see
… that lazy Miss-Sipp-Pee (Mississippi)
...hurryin' into spring.

The moonlight on the bayou.......a Creole tune,
.... that fills the air, I dream about Magnolias in bloom,
......and I'm wishin' I was there.

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?
When that's where you left your heart?
And there's one thing more...
I miss the one I care for … More than I miss New Orleans …

(instrumental break)

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?
When that's where you left your heart?
And there's one thing more...I miss the one I care for,

… more than I miss....
...New Orleans.

I asked this in the Fats Domino post, but I'm wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of Satchmo's trumpet? The last I saw it, it was in some dark room in the old part of New Orleans many years ago, behind some white knee-high little fence in the interior of that dark room just sitting there. Is it floating down Canal Street? Anybody study the details of any of those looter photos, seen anyone running around with a cornet or horn?

I don't know. There is much history in that town. And while it may seem off to some to bemoan the loss of artifacts and documents, they are not "free" to leave the area when a storm approaches.

I accept that some people could not get out in time (either not getting the message, not being mobile, or not being able to get a vehicle in time); there were also those who chose to stay at home (including Fats Domino and Alex Chilton). I'm sure that some others stayed home (even if they didn't have "hurricane parties" this time). Everyone is worthy of rescue; consider some of them like the hikers who wander off the trail and require vast search expeditions.

Again, historical items were left behind to the rising waters and strong winds. Were they hit by looters? Probably not but the possibility exists. It may be the only way some items could be saved from harm (including sitting in a water soaked room for a week or more).

I also haven't read any mention of the zoo.

BTW, Sam Butera's version of this song has been running through my head for days. I know he retired last year but I'd like to see him come out of retirement for a telethon appearance. He's like a number of Italian families who settled in New Orleans (a common destination for immigrants). I think the route took them to South America first.

One of the local Dixieland band here in Chicago concludes with this slight modification:

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?
When that's where you left your heart?
And there's one thing more...I miss red Cayenne peppers,
More than I miss New Orleans.

If your are talking about the Audubon(sp) Zoo, I am happy to say that the zoo and the animals have fared well at least thus far.

Good to hear someone's feeding them and that looters aren't eating them.

It's the only zoo with the genus, species, and recipe for the animals by each cage.
