First Vanity: Inconvenience of Terri

The tragic soon death of Terri Schiavo is being blamed on the courts, the husband, the lawyers, or any other institution we collectively think bears some responsibility.

The truth is, it is the people of the state of Florida and in a bigger picture all of us, who are letting her be killed.

This is true in two ways:

a) The Florida legislature, elected by the people of Florida, created and passed the law quite some time ago letting hearsay be used in place of a living will. Let this be an example of the result of such a law. There will always be evil people bent on killing the unwanted, whether it is a "husband" with questionable motives or anyone else. The reality is the laws of the state of Florida have allowed this to take place. On top of that the legislature has not made any great effort in undoing the harm that is being caused.

b) The legislature is elected by the people, the judge was elected by the people, the prosecutors (who won't charge for crimes that many here seem to think have occured) were elected by the people. There is no huge outcry from the people. The judge was even re-elected last year even after what became known about this case in 2003. For all the rhetoric I _read_ I haven't seen anyone arrested trying to save Terri's life. There is no civil disobedience -- maybe that is seen as a good statement about "peaceful" intentions of those who feel a murder is being watch. But if people feel that strongly yet are so passive they may as well be bowing at the feet of British royalty too.

Terri is being killed (or "let die" if you lean that way) due to her inconvenience. Fine. But I don't see anyone that cares other that for the sake of rhetoric about activist judges. Oh, we have to keep our separation of powers. Bull.

No one can wash their hands of Terri's blood, we live in a democracy where the people ARE the ones in power.

I heard yesterday that there is a provision in Florida law that says it is illegal to deny her of food and water and the Governor Bush can place her in protective custody, remove her from the hospice, and have the feeding tube reinserted. Do you know if this is true?

It is not right, nor the time, to turn against those who have helped more than others.

Whether he can do as you suggest or not, the governor who allowed Elian Gonzalez to be terrorized and exported to Cuba by jackbooted thugs will not do such an activist thing for Terri Schiavo.

If it is true, why doesn't someone just place her in PC and reinsert the feeding tube. TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!

you don't get it. it doesn't matter how many LAWS could or might be in place to allow intervention. no one has the guts to do so.

for example, it is the same as the case of child being abducted through some previously unthoughtof circumstance and everyone cries out for more/harsher laws. in fact, the laws in place are sufficient but (a) evil people do not follow the law, and (b) someone has to be willing to enforce the laws in place.

It'll be a cold day in hell when I donate any more money to help Florida rebuild after yet another hurricane. People who believe in the sanctity of life (their own and others')oughtta move out of there asap. (Sorry 'bout the rant - no offense to you folks in Fla. who are praying for and supportive of Terri)
