It sounds like you're inside of a heavy iron barrel and some fool is pounding on the outside with a lead-shot hammer....and then the tone/rhythm changes *just* as you were getting used to it...;))

I had an MRI of my shoulders in an open MRI and it was virtually silent. It was however made for someone who could wear a size 42 or smaller jacket, and I can't.

I had the open MRI for the last scan.
Having my eyes *almost* covered but not quite drove me to distraction....:))
But, yes, it was very quiet...and the table was hard and uncomfortable and they didn't put a pillow under my knees like they did with the closed one.
Had an awful backache when it was over.

Well, portable chest x-rays are done daily in every hospital...why not a portable MRI?

If they had a sense of humor they'd make it look like a rocketship.

One would think that every sort of brain scan would have been done, wouldn't one? But, the fact is, that Judge Greer would not allow any more brain scans to be done! This is why the U.S. Congress has stepped in. This judge is the only judge that has heard Terri's case. He will not allow anything to be done. He will not allow Terri swallow therapy, so that she might be able to live "off the tubes"...

Oh, and the judge...he is a PROBATE judge.

That is heartbreaking.

Just when I thought what's being done to her couldn't possibly seem more evil....:-(

"I am not a radiologist but know enough to know the ventricles are huge. You see that when brain tissue is atrophied."

Very true and a good start. The enlarged spaces indicate a great deal of atrophy. That great, dark mass in the center is a large space where no tissue is present. The bright object is the thalmic stimulator implanted by the clinic in California.

Terri responds to her mother. Period.

P.S. Can a tomato smile at her mother?

that's a very superficial test, the results of which are inconclusive.

due to the way senses are routed before and after primary input and prior to cognitive synthesis, it is possible for a subject to track moving objects with the eye and yet not consciously see them, given specific patterns of damage. This form of blindness is rare, but it is documented and has been studied in subjects who were otherwise unimpaired. Basic visual tracking is handled in a part of the brain quite separate from cognitive synthesis.

Conversely, a subject might be able to cognitively recognize things, people, etc... and yet be blind to their motion.

Additionally, a subject can be rendered able to see, track, and cognitively recognize everything, but be unable to summon emotional memory associated with elements in his environment, causing yet another form of traumatic-insult induced blindness.

None of which can be accurately diagnosed by observation of the subject's superficial reactions. PET and activity MRI are far better tools for such diagnostics.

Maybe not, but a Venus Flytrap can 'bite' you.

The dark area is supposed to be liquid, gone, missing Is there someone on here who really knows how to read this thing?

IIRC, one of you is a radiologist. Can you offer any opinion from one slice of Terri Schiavo's CT scan?

Sorry for the late reply. I did not log in on Saturday.

The "dark areas" are the CT density of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF).

The larger butterfly-shaped area in the center is CSF within the right and left lateral ventricles. The other serpiginous areas are CSF in the subarachnoid space collecting in the sulci and in the fissures of the brain.

The amount of fluid in the vetricles is increased indicating Hydrocephalus.

The bright area within one of the ventricles would be expected to be a portion of a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt to alleviate the hydrocephalus.

The brain tissue also shows cortical atrophy which increases the potential space between the brain tissue and that space is the filled up with CSF.

The degree of atrophy increases with age and all of us who actually lived through the 60's have some degree of cortical atrophy. The degree of cortical atrophy, however, is definitely abnormal for a woman her age

Be that as it may, you really can't make any clinical judgments as to her mental capacity just by the degree of hydrocephalus and atrophy.

I often see patients with that degree of hydrocephalus with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in place that are doing just fine.

In addition, many elderly patients with that degree of atrophy that are doing well for their age.

Grandma might not be the sharpest pencil in the family box anymore once she gets to that degree of atrophy but you would be killing off trainloads of Grandmas if you used that degree of cortical atrophy to decide when to end their lives.

> In 15 years you don't think they have done every MRI, Catscan, Petscan, blah, blah, blah.

Sounds like you're unaware of only one less than optimal CT scan having been taken on Terri. Felos was satisfied with the single CT. So Greer accomodated Felos and HINO and has refused every subsequent request for any more current (and improved technology) tests.
(see http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/1365693/posts?page=286#286 )

> Especially since there was a lawsuit and this has been in the courts again and again.

No court above Greer's has authority to review case facts -- only if proper legal and court procedure was adhered to. Your view that "this has been in the courts again and again." is technically true, but lacks understanding that Greer's adamant refusal to consider facts and evidence Terri's parents/attorneys motioned to submit for consideration has never been examined.

> I continue to try to understand this case.

It's good that you're open to more than a surface examination of what's reported about Terri Schiavo's situation. There's an enormous background history of corruption swirling around the major characters.
I suggest you visit the transcript site for Larry King's most recent (3/18) interview with HINO. Do a search for this term: what we want...
Another site: theempirejournal.com is a tremendous eyeopener.

Apparently the brain can always find another way....:)
The Montessori method was originally used on children who were said to literally only have half a brain.
