Just thought I would tap my fellow freepers for ideas on what I should visit while in Georgia. I will be around the Augusta area, also called the Historic South area (I think), at the end of April. Is it too far to drive and see the coast? I am looking forward to visiting The Civil War places, etc... I am doing plenty of homework myself, got the Travel Guide coming from Georgia, looking on the internet, etc...but I know word of mouth is sometimes better than anything. So thanks in advance.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. That is exactly what I am wanting. I am printing your reply out and will go over it with my husband later.

Once again, thank you.

If you are driving from Atlanta, you can circle off of I-20 at Crawfordville and visit the Alexander Stephens home and museum (VP of the Confederacy). http://gastateparks.org/info/ahsteph/

25 miles northeast of Crawfordville is Washington, Ga, which is full of historic homes including the Robert Toombs house.

Savannah would be a good choice for a side trip. The historic area is fairly compact and good for walking. A side trip would take you out to Fort Pulaski. Further down the coast you get to Darien and St. Simons Island (historic sites) or Jekyll Island (beaches).

Going the opposite direction from Augusta, one of the best battlefield sites in Georgia is just outside of Atlanta at Kennesaw Mountain.
