Warning - Credit Card Fraud (vanity - my first one)
self | 1/7/05 | self

Posted on 01/07/2005 4:36:13 PM PST by JLO

Yikes! My partner just opened up his MasterCard bill rec'd today. He hasn't used this card for many months and always had paid it off monthly. $0 balance as of last statement months ago.

Today - charges of over $1,600 were listed, and when we called tonight, it was over $2K.

Charges were to "Internet Gaming."

Thank goodness MasterCard said he wasn't liable for any of the charges, as it wasn't his normal pattern.

Ha! He's not even computer literate, and prides himself on that fact, LOL.

I'm just posting for others to be on the lookout for fraud. My partner carries his card with him, and it was not stolen. We can't imagine (!) how someone got his number - the last time he remembers using the card was in a restaurant many months ago.

Be careful, out there.

Unless my memory is failing me, a credit card holder is liable up to fifty dollars only in case of proven fraud.

I think this whole fraud and identity theft issue is only going to get worse before it gets better.

Thanks for the thread.

It happened to me too, but the card company didn't believe me because my account was new and that I had gambled online 2 years ago. My situation was slightly different because the fraud was committed by a 'friend' of mine.

I'm paying £5500 off now (Around $11000) for something I wasn't responsible for. I could challenge it, but it might put my life in peril. Still, I can afford it (I'm very wealthy thankfully) and the offender has been dealt with. But watch out, I can't stress that enough.

There is no effort by retailers to crack down on credit card theft. This is the problem. The costs of prosecution outweigh the write-off.

Have I ever mentioned how much I appreciate your opinions? ;)

I once had a $5000 charge out of London. Had been there about two years prior. When I called, all the VISA people said was fine and that's the last I heard about it.

Ya, my Visa card says I'm liable for the $50 dollars, I think. Maybe MasterCard is different, I don't know. Apparently, they agree it is fraud in this case, though... for now. They said he'd be getting a form to fill out in the mail.

I hope they can trace back to the loser's ISP and nail him!

It's possible that someone got the number by rifling through his garbage. You'd be amazed at what some people will leave sitting by the curb.

My (ex) american wife ran up a huge medical bill in the UK, due to a serious illness. She returned to the US and the NHS (our social medical care) sent her letter. She ignored it and that was it.

Cool!

That's kinda what we wonder, too. We live in a remote part of northern MN, but pay to have a garbage pick up once a week. Apparently, they sort. We used to burn in the barrel out back, but not so lately. Too much snow.

We've talked about a shredder before; will for sure get one now.

I still wonder though, if it wasn't the restaurant credit card bill that had the carbon paper in the middle, thrown out, that someone grabbed...??? That seems most unbelievable because all here know him and like him a lot. Yet, it seems the most possible scenario I can think of. Going through our garbage at the point of actually 'going through' it, seems too gross. Littered with all the wet normal garbage, I mean. Stinky stuff.

Hey, you know what, Tonk? I've tried numerous times to Freepmail you and others to this thread to warn other guys.

No luck privately Freepmailng to my ping list.

All I want to do is warn you guys. My VN vet guy is more than loved by those who know him, so I don't think someone stole his identification by anyone he knows. And yet...he no more gets on a computer and know how to naviagate, than I know how to ride a bull moose gone bad.

Be careful! Someone is dicking around out there! My guy is is totally freaked that someone might have his SS info and could hack into his benefits.

Here's who I tried sending this to, with no luck.

Same thing happens here with our social medical system, Medicaid. I've seen patients with new cars or vacation homes scam the system big time. I'm not sure but the trick seems to be purchasing out of state. Lot harder to track. If you were still married you saved a bundle (i.e.rebate) , if not, you paid for it eventually .

From where in the UK are you ? For the life of me, I can't get a grip on the fact you consider yourselves "United Kingdom". I consider you all as Welsh (my ancestry) British, Scottish, or Irish.

Make sure you get a cross-cut shredder, not just a strip shredder.
