The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ok, here are the pictures from when we picked up the Beetle yesterday...

Here it is in the field, getting ready to be pulled to the trailer...you can just make out Steve in the seat steering...

There it goes!

On the trailer...

Now it's home, in our shop driveway. My ramps were in the "still thinking about it" phase here.

Almost out...note my ramps are in good position and nailed together. Also note, it got DARK in the time it took us to work on getting this thing out of the back of that trailer!

Home Sweet Home

Huzzah for 2J! The Precious is hers!

I must say that's not the most auspicious name I can think of... doesn't it imply the car will be destroyed in a firey cataclysm?

Yep...I guess I should change it, although it is likely the only "birthday present" I'm likely to get! :-)

How about Mein Käfer?

I like 'my precious' because you've been near obsessed with finding it. I think you should paint "my precious", or the runes from the ring, on your door when you are done.

In other Knife Knews, I had a nice chat with Michele, the Camillus government sales rep. Lots of news to report, none of it really great, but not bad, either.

First the Cuda CQB1 that the government bought 30,000 of is identical to what you civilians can buy, except for the method of packaging. Per mil spec, it's wrapped in aluminized VPI paper, and heat sealed in a heavy-duty plastic baggie for extra-long-term storage. (Why are visions of the Ark of the Covenant popping into my head?). The only other difference is an instruction sheet to help figure out the fancy multi-angle mounting bracket, and a cleaning cloth.

Second, while we'll get a great price, it will still be in the $150 price range, about what I've been paying for the Extrema Ratios. This CGB1 will probably become our "above and beyond" knife when the ERs are gone. Still a great knife, and a great price. Just not the absolute steal we got with the CQB3s.

Third, her company is quite interested in swapping one of our CQB3s, all customized, for a stock model. They'd like to put it in their company museum.

Fourth, I've made a production decision, and will be buying a supply of alternate Hobbit Hole pocket knives. The CRKTS are still out there at the same great price, but delivery times are stretching out with the dealer. Based on the prototypes I tested when it looked like the CRKTs were going to dry up the last time, I'm buying Ka-Bar folders to supplement our CRKTs. They're a great value, even at "street" price, and were the nicest of the substitutes. They're aren't as heavily built as the CRKT, but the thinner, sharper, blade is an even-better quality AUS8 steel, it still opens one-handed and locks, and it has a reversible pocket clip.

Yeah...that's true.

I am thinking of putting KAFER70 on the lisence plate...if we ever get the thing running!

What's KAFER?

Boil 'em up. Mash 'em up. Stick 'em in a stew?

It's my job!

Heh, you guys wouldn't recognize me at work/school. I work very very hard to be a chipper, optimistic, hard-working person. Only friends get to see my cynical personality - you should be honored.

Well Rosie, look at it this way, if y'all had gotten a load of snow and all the accompanying wind, you wouldn't have been able to get stuff to the dump. You're that much farther along than you might have been!

They make a tool that spreads drywall compound into corners. Is there a tool rental story anywhere near you? You can call to see how much it would be to rent one if you don't want to buy one. I really don't know how much they cost, but I wouldn't think they'd be very expensive. Or maybe just a bead of caulk, run straight down the corner, then wet your finger and smooth it down so that it blends in with the wall on either side.

HTH

BURN THE HERETIC!!! Unclean!!! UNCLEAN!!!

She's big into Japanese and Indian foods. Does nuthin fer me, I can tell ya. Her kids aren't totally vegan, but they are vegetarian. Clare's mystified. She just can't understand how folks just decide NOT to eat meat.

It's wrong. Not eating meat is one of my big warning signs. It's like someone who doesn't like music, or doesn't read.

I'm ridiculously proud. I'll post pictures after while.

Girl, you oughta be! Am looking forward to the pictures.

Once I figure out how to get the pics from the new digital camera into the computer, I'll post some pictures of the snowfall at our house. It was considerable.

I'm going to look at it again when I get home. But I'm thinkin' caulk might be enough. We aren't talking about massive amounts of space...

Only catch is that the hardware stores generally close at five, and I get off at four...so if I don't stop on my way home, this may be waiting for another day. And I'm so impatient! Want this done, as done as it's gonna be. It's all that's keeping me from contacting the realtor...
