Is anyone else trying to watch the Christmas programming on "ABC Family"?
There are several good programs on, many of them are the old Clay-mation Christmas shows that I remember from my childhood. And before I get bashed for not knowing that Jesus is the reason for the season, I do. But I also know that these are good, wholesome classics and are a Christmas tradition in my family.
The problem is: nearly every commercial break contains a plug for the "ABC Family" show "Degrassi High", which appears to be aimed at teenagers and has at least one positively-portrayed gay (teenage) character. I don't think I need to be explaining to my children, who are trying to watch a Christmas show, what being "gay" is.
I know that I can switch channels, but why should I have to? This is supposed to be the ABC "Family" channel.
I plan to write this channel and their sponsors. I did a search here on FreeRepublic for any threads mentioning ABC Family or Degrassi High and did not find any.
Has this upset anyone else here?
Obviously you are one of those racist red-neck uneducated southerners who goes to Church. The smarter more tolerant people at ABC will show you the way....
That brought a smile to my face.
Have a holly, jolly Christmas.
You could change the channel, or you could turn off the TV... since when does life in a "free republic" include being forced to watch television. Are the television police chaining you to a chair?
As Soon as ABC took over the Family channel it no longer had any real resemlence to CBN. I stopped watching it years ago.
There is only one reason for the mainstream media to even want it and that is to pervert it and those whose watch it.
ABC Family has the right to advertise it's own programming anytime it wants to, and they don't "owe it to you" to censor THEIR advertising to keep YOUR children from finding about about homosexuality or any other subject you may find objectionable.
If you don't like it, turn the damn thing off and find something else to do with your time (or just change the channel). It's called Freedom of Speech, man--you might want to look into it.
You are the same kind of person who said the same kind of crap when Janet had her 'wardrobe malfunction'.
I would have changed the channel then too had I known it was coming.
I'm not a prude. I'm not even religious, but there's a time and place for that and it's not during a prime time kid's show.
I would find condom ads or herpes medicine ads objectionable as well, at that time during a children's show.
I imagine you'll feel different when you grow up and have kids.
RE: "Would it be freedom of speech for them to show a full-frontal teaser for Penthouse TV in the middle of "Rudolph's Hunky-Dory Christmas" in prime time too?"
Absolutely. I firmly believe that the open marketplace should be the ONLY "regulatory body" for television. The FCC is a big government/socialist threat to freedom of speech which is allowed to operate by even the most conservative elected officials because it allows them an easy cash cow for federal funds and an easy fundamentalist scapegoat on which to pin public attention when it should be on more pressing matters (like the WOT and tax reform).
I'm sure the rage of America's parents, coupled with the requisite sponsor boycotts and letterwriting campaigns would be more than enough to ensure that such a (yes, diisgusting) hypothetical situation like the one you presented would never occur again on a major network.
NOTE: Although this in no way changes my opinion on this matter, I must raise an objection to your straw-man comparison of something as wild and tasteless as hardcore porn to something as mild as Degrassi High, which boasts nothing worse than the positive (actually just non-critical) portrayal of a homosexual character.
By your ugly words-- repeated by a shamefully large number here on FR-- I take it you have never had a friend who happened to be gay, or maybe you have never even met a gay man. Whether or not you approve of their behavior (and in America, we ALL are entitled to our various opinions on this subject) I don't think they mean you any harm.
Isn't "Degrassi High" a Canadian program? Isn't their television state run? Might have something to do with the liberal agenda being pushed in the show.
Stop trying to make all Christians (myself included) look as bad (ignorant, backwards, redneck) as you do when you spew that crap.
And BTW, spellcheck is your friend.
Use it, nitwit.
