Cheney Rumor of the Day (Don't shoot messenger)
me | today | me

Posted on 07/29/2004 9:44:14 AM PDT by Iron Eagle

Like I said, don't shoot the messenger. I know some folks here get very sensitive when discussing the VP being replaced. The title should be a fair warning not to read on if one find's one's self easily angered by rummors.

This is a rummor -- period. It is not from my uncle's, brother's sister's boyfriend's friend. It is from a source I have found to be reliable from time to time.

I pass it along not as truth, but as interesting.

Here goes.

Bush will sign an executive order -- several -- in the next few days implimnenting certain 9/11 commission recomendations. In doing so, he will create an Intelligence czar. He will choose someone he knows, someone who can do the job, and someone who needs no learning curve. He will appoint Dick Cheney.

In doing so -- he is said to have struck a deal with a reluctant Colin Powell to be the VP for the second term. (Powell has indicated he will not run in '08, and the source says Powell recommended someone else.) Powell, the loyal soldier, has agreed.

Again -- I would not wait for the news story to break, but I find the source to have some good info from time to time. And, while I do not sit at any of these meetings, I do have some wonderful sources and contact through my years of involvement as a candidate and strategist with the party.

I don't think its true, but as a political junkie, I think it is interesting. Here is why:

1) Powell will be well-received by independents and swing dems.

2) Powell becomes first Black VP (Republican)

3) By not running in 08, Powell might appease pro-life Republican base.

4) By shifting Cheney to intelligence czar, Cheney is where Bush wants him, and Prez can claim no dump -- but rather shift to critical job.

It is certainly an interesting scenario... and one shocking enough the take the wind out of the post-convention sails of Kerry.

I always thought Cheney would be a good choice to replace Tenet at the CIA. Not that it's gonna happen, though.

I can't wait to read the interesting comments on THIS thread!

Ann Coulter says of the Democrats...
"Democrats are representative of the nation only if the nation we're talking about is Brazil. For Democrats, there is only the maid and millionaires."

(1) Putting in Powell as VP candidate will be perceived as just a vote-getting ploy.

(2) Putting in a VP who supports the murder of unborn children will be a vote losing ploy.

It would be better to make the shift, if it comes, after the election. This would be an ideal time to bring Powell in. The Democrats would have to confirm Powell.

There's been stuff like that floating around in the past few weeks. The way it usually works is someone who thinks "I bet they dump Cheney", then reads the 9/11 report and says "wow, that would be a perfect way to ease out Cheney, make him intelligence czar". Then that person thinks "okay, who would they get to replace Cheney? Powell would probably be the best choice, but they'd have to persuade them".

Then that person talks to someone else "hey, you know, maybe they're setting up Cheney to be intelligence czar and then they could put Powell on the ticket".

A couple more iterations and it becomes a hot rumor that Powell's been persuaded to replace Cheney on the ticket. Your source certainly isn't making things up, it's just that there may be a pretty mundane origin to this story.

I'm thinking Guiliani or Zell Miller for CIA...
