AMY'S Place .. Poetry and Potpourri .. May 30th, 2004

Graphic by Billie

Remember to Salute

A thousand flags are held by men, A thousand stories of back when, The warriors clashed ‘neath battered rag. On closer view, it was their flag.

The flag stood always at the front, When battle came, it took the brunt, And though the bullets rent and tore, The flag would never shirk from war.

Every flag, and every color, Holds a meaning, all of valor. Men who stand in salutation, Are the fabric of our nation.

And the flag that fills their eyes, Along with tears that might arise, Show the heart that forges on, ‘Til the victory has been won.

Stand and honor passing glory, Remember well the honored story. The flag deserves salute and then, Remember to salute the men.

We hope everyone is having a safe and pleasant holiday. BTW, the 29th is Bob Hopes birthday, he would have been 101 and President Kennedy would have been 87.

While Amy is off on Holiday, we (Chads) and I will be your hosts for today's thread. The wonderful graphic was designed by the lovely and talented Billie!

Since it is still the day of the dedication to the WW2 vets memorial on the West coast where I am, I wanted to take just a moment to salute those brave men and women who fought so valiantly for freedom all those years ago. One of them was my dad, who I wish with all of my being could have lived to see the honor bestowed to them all today in DC.

What a breathtaking ceremony took place! It was wonderful when the camera panned to the invited guests and you saw so many obvious vets from the Great war. Their emotional reaction was so touching to see, and it made tears come to more than one eye that is for sure!

This Memorial day, let's remember to take a few moments to remember the sacrifices these courageous men and women gave for us all! May God bless those still with us, and may those who have gone on RIP! WE HONOR THEIR MEMORY!

I LOVE YOU DADDY! I STILL FLY YOUR FLAG FOR YOU EVERYDAY!

I heard Robert Dole on FOX News yesterday mention that yesterday would have been Bob Hope's and John Kennedy's birthdays. Thanks for mentioning them.

Bob Hope: 1903-2003

Reposting the lyrics from that same link there:

Lyrics:
-Words and Music by Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger
-introduced in the film "Big Broadcast Of 1938" by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross
-adopted by Hope as his theme songThanks for the memory

Thanks for the memory
Of candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine
The Parthenon and moments on the Hudson River Line
How lovely it was!

Thanks for the memory
Of rainy afternoons, swingy Harlem tunes
And motor trips and burning lips and burning toast and prunes
How lovely it was!

Many's the time that we feasted
And many's the time that we fasted
Oh, well, it was swell while it lasted
We did have fun and no harm done

And thanks for the memory
Of sunburns at the shore, nights in Singapore
You might have been a headache but you never were a bore
So thank you so much.

Thanks for the memory
Of sentimental verse, nothing in my purse
And chuckles when the preacher said "For better or for worse"
How lovely it was

Thanks for the memory
Of lingerie with lace, Pilsner by the case
And how I jumped the day you trumped my one-and-only ace
How lovely it was!

We said goodbye with a highball
Then I got as "high" as a steeple
But we were intelligent people
No tears, no fuss, Hooray! For us

So, thanks for the memory
And strictly entre-nous, darling how are you?
And how are all the little dreams that never did come true?
Aw'flly glad I met you, cheerio, and toodle-oo
And thank you so much

The Best Consoler

Read: John 14:16-21,24-27

I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. —John 14:16

Bible In One Year: 2 Chronicles 10-12; John 11:30-57

When two uniformed men came to my door on Memorial Day afternoon, I thought they were collecting for charity. Instead, they told me that my sister and her husband had been killed in an accident earlier that day.

Just over a year after that shattering event, our church choir sang "Veni, Sancte Spiritus" ("Come, Holy Spirit") on Pentecost Sunday (Whitsunday). It brought a wave of peace over my still-aching soul. One verse says: "Thou best of Consolers, sweet guest of the soul, sweet refreshment. In labor, Thou art rest; in heat, the tempering; in grief, the consolation."

On Pentecost Sunday, many churches celebrate the Holy Spirit's coming in power on the disciples (Acts 2:1-21). But the Spirit came also as the Comforter promised by Jesus: "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever" (John 14:16). The Spirit lives within each Christian, bringing the peace of Christ along with encouragement and alleviation of grief.

Pentecost and Memorial Day seldom fall next to each other as they do in 2004. But the "sweet guest of the soul" is always with us on any day we remember our loved ones who have died. In grief, the Spirit is our consolation, the light of our hearts, the giver of everlasting joy. —David McCasland

O spread the tidings 'round wherever man is found,
Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;
Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound:
The Comforter has come! —Bottome

In every desert of trial, the Holy Spirit is our oasis of comfort.

What a wonderful tribute.

That MeekOneGOP guy is always coming up with the good stuff. It must be that he is advised by his wife.:>)

Good one Mr. Meek - as usual.

Bob Hope is a great one- we all will miss him, just as we miss the vets of previous wars and conflicts that have gone to the RIP land.

I see Bob invited Ronald and Nancy into his FReepmobile. I suppose Jim will do the same for President Bush and Lora. LOL

Good pics on a very appropriate occasion.
