Chicago GOP Chair Steve Boulton Tries to Save Ward Committeeman Seat as Write-in Candidate, Secures Only 24 Votes in Humiliating Defeat Without an Opponent

Chicago Republican Party Chairman Steve Boulton has lost the election to save his 27th Ward Committeeman seat after he was originally knocked off the ballot for submitting an “insufficient number of valid signatures,” after receiving just 24 votes as a write-in candidate – falling far short while facing no opponent, and bringing a humiliating end to a term marked by controversy and losses.

111 signatures were required to appear on the March Primary ballot as a candidate for 27th Ward Committeeman. Boulton submitted a total of 310, but after careful review, it was discovered that only 103 signatures were valid – leaving Boulton 8 signatures short. As a write-in candidate, official election results revealed that Boulton secured just 24 votes and faced no opponent.

If he got 24 votes and no one else got any why wouldn’t he be declared the winner?

I was going to say, a “Republican” in Cshitcongo has to be skewed a little to the left of center.

Under Illinois law, unopposed write-in candidates must receive the same number of votes as would equal the number of valid petition signatures needed for ballot access. Otherwise, the write-in candidates are not elected.

During the same election, two other write-in candidates were elected and these candidates both received over 1,000 votes.

Interestingly they check every one with a magnifying glass when you are turning in signatures to qualify for the ballot. As a delegate I have experienced it here in San Francisco. Every signer’s registration checked and validated etc.

It can be done! They only do it for those seeking to get in the ballot though it seems.

Ain’t it funny how signature verification suddenly matters when it’s a republican trying to get enough signatures to be on the ballot?

Check out the photograph accompanying the article: the guy looks like Kent Dorfman from “National Lampoon’s Animal House.”

Many thanks! The linked article mystified me until I read your explanation.

I don’t know what’s going on here but it seems absurd he couldn’t find 125 or whatever people to get out and vote. The residents must either really dislike him, or he has absolutely no skills or no real desire to keep the seat.
