Sachs: If We Start Seizing Russian Assets, Kiss Goodbye To America's Role In The International Monetary System
RealClearPolitics ^ | 4/6/24 | Tim Hains

Economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs weighs in on the latest on the Russia-Ukraine war during an interview with The Hill's "Rising."

JEFFREY SACHS: You can't make sense of this, it's a zoo. If I am just hearing now, the plan is to illegally seize Russian assets, well kiss goodbye to America's role in the international monetary system. There are limits to what you can do, but I don't think our members of Congress really understand much about this.

...

This is purely money down the drain. If they want to rip up another $61 billion, which is not chump change, they seem intent on doing it but it will mean nothing except more destruction of Ukraine.

If you don't listen to the nonsense in our mainstream media, but listen to your show and others, people would know that this war has destroyed Ukraine. And the longer it continues, the less there will be of Ukraine. It is very simple, if this goes on longer, Russia will capture more territory. If it goes on long enough, Russia will capture Odessa. Kiev, if we continue the way we're doing. This is a Biden project that goes back 10 years now, we'll completely destroy Ukraine. The idea that this is "siding with" Ukraine is absurd. Anyone who really follows events knows that we're not siding with Ukraine, we have paid for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to go to the front lines and die, for more and more territory to be lost.

I think there are a number of Ukrainian-Americans on FR.

There are.

Nevertheless, it's easy to recognize that as far mas the governments are concerned, there are no good guys in this fight. Being of Ukrainian heritage does not cloud common sense judgment and make someone by default a Zelensky supporter.

My heart goes out to all the average citizens who are caught in the midst of this conflict. I have no doubt, the majority of them just want to go to work, raise a family, and live in peace.

I thought BRICS was going take over as the world’s reserve currency.

"Screw Russia. Putin says he’s at war with us so let’s start respecting his opinion.

Wow, you are a deep thinker. Let's fight a nuclear war because of your endless hate.

You know that I believe that 'War Karen' would never say something emotional and idiotic.

“The big downside to reserve currency status is running trade deficits.”

While that’s true you also have to take in the benefits. It allows us to tinker with the global financial system, run up huge deficits and make the dollar worth more in comparison to other currencies. But this is all coming down regardless with our $34 trillion plus in UNPAYABLE debt. This Ponzi is coming to an end. We have our own gas and oil but most European countries are screwed. In any event the dollar is headed down in a big way and so is our standard of living. If you think there’s social unrest in this country now you haven’t seen nothing yet.

The “world financial system” is just a catchall term for the daily interactions of various market players. The US is able to move the needle because of its economic heft, not reserve currency status. The dollar wasn’t the world reserve currency during WW1, when the US kept Britain and France afloat by extending huge loans.

It is the strongest player because of the size and liquidity of its market, and the energy and inventiveness of its large corporations. This was the case decades before WW2 as American corporations from Standard Oil to Ford Motor Corporation became leaders in their industrial niches. Today, behemoths like Google, Tesla, Microsoft, Pfizer, et al, are ultimately the underwriters of American prosperity, the national champions that keep America strong.

Jeff Sachs is one of those lefties who has swallowed whole hog the Russian fairy tale that the US became wealthy by putting a knife to the world’s collective throat. Basically, the Russians replaced the evil Jew in the Russian-authored Protocols of the Elders of Zion with the evil, conniving American.

“Why would any Republicans want to...save Biden”

Biden is the best candidate to oppose President Trump. (Aside from VP Kalamala Harris).

Note the honorarium, “President” Trump.

Well the U.S. has been waging war by proxy against Russia.

And you know we blew up that pipeline which is an act of war on our part.

I am no fan of Putin. He is a lunatic. But we are provoking Russia and supporting the criminal regime in the Ukraine.

Thank you for acknowledging and not attempting to refute the simple facts.

Cry for yourself.
