Sachs: If We Start Seizing Russian Assets, Kiss Goodbye To America's Role In The International Monetary System
RealClearPolitics ^ | 4/6/24 | Tim Hains

Economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs weighs in on the latest on the Russia-Ukraine war during an interview with The Hill's "Rising."

JEFFREY SACHS: You can't make sense of this, it's a zoo. If I am just hearing now, the plan is to illegally seize Russian assets, well kiss goodbye to America's role in the international monetary system. There are limits to what you can do, but I don't think our members of Congress really understand much about this.

...

This is purely money down the drain. If they want to rip up another $61 billion, which is not chump change, they seem intent on doing it but it will mean nothing except more destruction of Ukraine.

If you don't listen to the nonsense in our mainstream media, but listen to your show and others, people would know that this war has destroyed Ukraine. And the longer it continues, the less there will be of Ukraine. It is very simple, if this goes on longer, Russia will capture more territory. If it goes on long enough, Russia will capture Odessa. Kiev, if we continue the way we're doing. This is a Biden project that goes back 10 years now, we'll completely destroy Ukraine. The idea that this is "siding with" Ukraine is absurd. Anyone who really follows events knows that we're not siding with Ukraine, we have paid for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to go to the front lines and die, for more and more territory to be lost.

Why would any Republicans want to (1) save Biden and another of his disastrous foreign policy decisions and (2) condemn thousands more to death in a pointless war that serves only the same globalist elites that are waging war-by-other-means against Americans as surely as they are attacking Russia?

Screw Russia. Putin says he’s at war with us so let’s start respecting his opinion.

Oh look, the pro-Putin bots are posting far-left socialist economists on FR now. They must be worried.

We should give the assets back to Russia (after Putin).

I think there are a number of Ukrainian-Americans on FR. Also, there are Freepers who think we're still fighting the Cold War against the commie Soviets.

Even if, especially if, Putin was a closet commie Soviet then it would make sense to back off. I wasn't a big fan of MAD, but it does seem to have kept us from nuclear destruction.

We didn't help Hungary during their uprising. We didn't help the Czechs after the Prague Spring was crushed. In both cases I believe it was because we didn't want the Cold War to turn Hot. Why would we believe that what we're doing in Ukraine isn't going to result in much of the Earth getting extremely hot?

You like to wake up in the morning to a mushroom cloud? It’s an active act of war, not passive.

The ZEEPERS who pollute the boards here with their never-ending jihad to drain American taxpayers to support the continuous slaughter in Ukraine are EXTREMELY SHORTSIGHTED. Actions being taken or considered by Biden’s puppet masters and the globalist neocons are weakening America and, if continued, strongly risk destruction of the American dollar as THE WORLD’S RESERVE CURRENCY. FOOLS!

If we want a war with Russia (The American People do not) we best be getting ready NOW.
What should we do?
1. Manufacture a “pearl harbor” attack on America. Can’t use an atomic weapon but something else. Vacuum Bomb? Maybe hit our naval base in Dubai? Or sink a US Gunboat in the Red Sea? Torpedo a US Cruiser (let Iran do it) Blame Russia.
2. Russians attack a Trump Rally and get rid of Trump too. Lots of Mass death. Make sure all the shooters are killed. Dead men tell no tales. Leave lots of evidence to implicate Putin and/or Iran.
3. Sink a cruise ship full of US citizens, or set it on fire with lots of people dead—like a Disney Cruise full of Kids! That you must blame on Russia. CIA is good at that. Use AI to have “Putin” himself ordering the attack. A Russian plane from Cuba or a rocket would be a good one to fake?
ONLY something horrible would make the USA see red and want to fight Russia. This would get all Americans behind Biden (even Trump) and rally the nation to the cause of the Democrats—Whats the loss of a few thousand citizens for the greater good? A Democratic Party control for 100 years!

Which is precisely why China is directing their sock puppet Biden to do this.

My mother said “if I didn’t have something nice to say, say nothing at all.” But this must be said. We’re our own worst enemies here on Free Republic . This is why this country is in the shape it’s in. I want to blame Democrats but when you have this infighting, I wonder.

It’s interesting that Jeffrey Sachs has changed his tune in recent years. He used to be part of the establishment now he criticizes it. But he’s definitely right here because if we seize Russian assets then the Saudis and everyone else who buys US Treasury Bonds will start to park their assets elsewhere.

IN which case, it greatly increases the chances of them doing it.

The stupider and more destructive something is for this country, the more likely our government is likely to do it.

Siezing the assets of other nations - yes, nations, plural - will further erode the trust the USD needs to remain as the world’s reserve currency.

And, for goodness sake, a prerequisite to siezing anything from a nation must be an official declaration of war on that nation by the US Congress, following a request by the President.

There are rules of conduct between sovereign nations. The US has been playing fast and loose with those rules for decades.

Ukraine ping

In the 90s, Jeff Sachs was a shill for Russian Communist officials who urged that Russian government assets be quickly and sloppily privatized in a way that put those assets in the personal pockets of these men. Now he’s shilling for Putin, one of the victors of that process. He’s obviously a creature of habit, and possibly on their payroll.

The US seized Iraq’s assets to pay Kuwait reparations. It seized Germany’s US assets for itself in WW1 and WW2. I used to think Jeff Sachs was wrong because he was locked into his left-wing nostrums by habit. Now I think he’s just lazy.

There’s a strain of thought among leftists that the US was a backwater, continental-scale hick town before WW2. Then WW2 ended, and the US became the #1 economy by pointing a gun at the world’s head. In reality, however, it was already the #1 economy in 1900, when the British pound was the world reserve currency.

Reserve currency status is a burden. This is why the US made no effort to make the dollar a major reserve currency until the collapse of British finances after WW2 made it necessary. It needed to grease the wheels of international commerce so as to help the war-wrecked economies of the world recover. The alternative to economic resuscitation was Russian-equipped and -organized revolutions everywhere that made the US strategic situation a lot more dangerous.

The big downside to reserve currency status is running trade deficits. This is why Switzerland charges instead of pays interest to foreign institutions that park large sums in its currency.

Exactly. Those who were telling me that it wouldn't happen anytime soon, & I responded that is not a given. They are out to destroy this nation, and that is the prefect way to make sure this nation takes a fast & furious tumble. The result will not be pretty at all for this nation.

Wake up you slumbering people who are tuned into fantasy, & ignoring reality. Elections have consequences, & stolen elections have catastrophic consequences.

This administration is pure evil, full of evil intentions.

Another ping to you Uncle Lonny.
