America's Lost Boys and Me
Rob Henderson's Newsletter ^ | February 11, 2024 | Rob Henderson

From the time I was born until I was 17 years old, nearly everything in my life was propelling me to a life as one of America’s lost boys—the young men who fail to mature, do poorly in school, live on the economic margins, and become absentee fathers or fail to form stable families of their own.

Today, one in six American men between the ages of 25 and 54 are unemployed or out of the workforce altogether: about 10 million men. This number has more than doubled since the 1970s. Meantime, over the past half-century, the number of men behind bars has more than quadrupled.

One obvious metric for success is college graduation—and America’s young men are not standing up. The Wall Street Journal published a viral story in 2021 about how male students are vanishing from campus. Men now make up only 40 percent of college students, a gender gap that has been growing for decades. In the next few years, two women will earn a college degree for every man.

It’s no wonder fewer men are making it to college: boys begin falling behind girls as soon as they start attending school. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Human Resources found that, as early as kindergarten, girls begin earning better grades than boys.

But I’d fallen behind even earlier. Indeed, all of the ingredients for a lost life were there for me from birth.

My earliest memory is of me gripping my mother, in the dark, burying my face so deeply into her stomach I can’t breathe. It’s dark. I come up for air and see two police officers looming over us. They want to take her away. I’m scared. I don’t want to let her go.

Those stats are for all races. White male unemployment is considerably less.

I think boys need habituation and structure more than girls in order to not start off life on the wrong foot.

This was a very good article. It did leave out some very important points. #1 being if you pay more for something you get more of it. Simple economics. Democrats have been paying for Illegitimacy for decades. As the above chart shows it hit black families the hardest. This is because they were already on the low side of the social scale. Rather than sit back and congratulate ourselves at being a superior race Blacks are the canary in the coal mine. Illegitimacy is treading up for everybody else as well.

The Left keeps on pushing the White Supremacy narrative when the real issue is creeping socialism. Economic liberty is the one factor that makes Civilizations rich or poor.

Girls innately nurture and form families and groups of friends, boys do not and are more into competing with and opposing other individuals than in forming cooperative structures like families.

Makes sense that even in situations like divorece, loss of parents and entry into foster care, boys would fare worse.

Thanks for posting the article; amazing story. We will hear more from this person.

Weird, I thought I knew some Hispanic people before 1990.
I must be losing it…

I think a good fix for the US would be executing every bank executive, media executive, teacher, and HR worker.

And here I am thinking using Article V to repeal the Income Tax using a Balanced Budget Amendment was a radical idea!

Divorce became much more common in the 1960s when I was in grade school.

I learned to distance myself from boys whose parents were going through a divorce.

There seems to be a dearth of men in teaching nowadays. When I was in High school most of the teachers were WWII vets with a sprinkling of woman in the arts and language's. There was serious discipline administered and sometimes physical force was applied when needed. I don't think woman are capable of handling young men and should not be in charge of them weather, in schools or military settings.

"I think boys need habituation and structure more than girls in order to not start off life on the wrong foot."

I know for a 100% fact that it's all about the culture in which they grow up. Two years ago I moved to a poor, rural corner of Tennessee, and have come to know a good number of high-school aged boys here. They've grown up in "disadvantaged" homes - homes where they've had to drag urine-soaked mattresses out of the back room to put down and sleep on each night, with substance-abusing parents who have other priorities than raising kids.

They grew up skateboarding around this little town together and "MMA wrestling" in one-anothers' back yards after school. Every night at 7pm they congregate at the local truck stop, where the price of leftover chicken strips and rolls drops by half. And yet, these young men have grown into some of the finest young adults and hardest workers I've ever known.

These young men grew up attending a local church. Occasionally they find an opportunity to go camping, fishing or canoeing. On Saturday nights they meet for all-night "D&D" gaming. They are destined for great things, and I count myself privileged to have made their acquaintance.

I'm convinced that the only thing HillaryC ever said that was correct was that it does, indeed, "take a village".

I dream of the day nobody says anything bad about Mohammed because his awful Religion has gone extinct to the point where nobody remembers or cares about it anymore.

It does not "take a village". It comes from the heart of the individual and if their soul can either hear God's will or has purposely deafened that.

As an abandoned, fostered THEN kicked-out kid saved by Tennessee's official orphanage (T.P.S.) I feel for those young people you speak for as that avenue of rescue has been closed to them in favor of "politically correct" placement into poorly vetted foster families who are vaguely monitored if at all.

I believe the growing disparity between men and women at institutions of higher learning is akin to why military recruitment is suffering so badly:

No one of intelligence allows themselves to be tethered to a system that wastes time and money trying to brainwash that individual with socialism at a time they most need skill-training and practicality.
