I WENT to Edinburgh University in 1985. At that time, it was only 40 years since the end of the Second World War. It seems extraordinary that it is almost 40 years ago from now.
Everyone smoked. Everyone went to the pub. It was cheap. I was on a student grant supplemented by benefits in the holidays and the occasional job, but if you were reasonably careful going out wasn’t a problem. The idea that Scotland might become independent didn’t occur to us.
In 1985 everyone at university was white. There were hardly any foreign students. The only people from ethnic minorities I met ran shops or takeaways.
There was casual racism, but no one had heard of the concept of Islamophobia. We weren’t scared of the pleasant owners of corner shops. We had no more fear or hatred of Islam than we had of Hinduism.
For the same reason anti-Semitism did not exist. The old-style anti-Semitism that you come across in pre-war novels had been destroyed by the films of the Holocaust and by the understanding that such attitudes had contributed to the deaths of 6million Jews. For this reason, the Holocaust was not controversial. It was something you knew about because of TV documentaries such as The World at War. I don’t remember it being taught in school. Everyone who was educated knew at least the basics and accepted them.

I lean toward Vivek as the rising star with super-brain power. Kari is a close contender. Both are confident, smart, articulate, and very effective communicators.
The moral of the story is that Islam has been creeping into Western civilizations since WWII and now it’s reached ‘critical mass’ in many countries, and still expanding. There is no non-violent way we are going to stuff this demon back in the bottle and we shouldn’t delude ourselves into believing that we can reform the demon.
As usual, the problem is Islam.
Granted there are other problems - like Leftism - but Islam is clearly a problem, clearly has hateful, violent, backward tendencies and is completely alien to the West. It has been imported. It needs to be thrown out back from whence it came along with the carriers of it....ie muslim colonizers.
I think the writer rather casually dismisses PLO terrorism in the 70’s-80’s as a struggle for “ survival”.
In her words “ The PLO’s form of terrorism was not at that time suicide bombing. The terrorists wanted to survive, so they hijacked planes. They didn’t talk about Jihad. If they took hostages, they didn’t chop their heads off. They didn’t fly planes into buildings.”
On the contrary, PLO terror was just as hate-filled, bloody and intended to terrorize by attacking govts and their leaders and institutions such as Embassies and military members…..and by attacking and brutally killing the innocent.
Jewish children were a favored target, with PLO attacks specifically on babyhouses and schools in the kibbutzes, one being the Ma’ Alot massacre where dozens of school children died. In another PLO operatives entering from Lebanon, crept into a baby house, executed an infant and caretaker, but were foiled from massacring the entire daycare while kibbutzim members were at work. These attacks were not about “ survival”
Remember the MB inspired assassination of Anwar Sadat in 1981. The 1973 assassination of Cleo Noel, our US ambassador to Sudan with other hostages in the Saudi embassy..That one was persinally ordered by Yasser Arafat, the PLO leader. Where was the “ survival” motive.
Jewish and American travelers when hijacked were subject to summary execution. Remember an old man named Leon Klinghoffer in 1985, pushed overboard a cruise liner in his wheelchair?
Remember a young Navy diver named Robert Stethem who as a passenger aboard a commercial flight in 1985 was tortured, executed and dumped on a runway? He is buried in Arlington Section 59 near many other Americans vjctimized by palestininian/ muslim brotherhood ( MB) inspired terror.
Remember 241 troops that died in 1983 when the Marine barracks was bombed in Lebanon…at the direction of Iran’s govt, to its proxy militia.
As a military member in the 70’s and 80’s I remember traveling incognito in civilian clothes with a plan to hide passport if hijacked. I remember entering Israel and asking the entry official to issue his stamp on a separate piece of paper, so no Israeli stamp would be in my passport. I remember the look he gave me. I felt like a coward, but we both knew why.
There is more, much more to the pattern of acts by vanguard extremist psychopaths of this nihilist ideology cloaking itself as “ one of the world’s great religions” …the fact that it is accepted or even admired is the fault of ignorant or cowardly or mentally unbalanced leaders and lemmings in the West, who refuse to see the monster looming behind them in the mirror.
Israel tries to warn us, we are next. The terror ideologists themselves warn us: “ First the Saturday people, then the Sunday people”
My History Professor who specialized in German History used to say, “We have all the details. We even have the train schedules. Full trains coming in. Empty trains going out.”
Could this possibly be what they call "assimilation"?
