I don’t know when “back then” was for you but “stolen valor” wasn’t probably much known or thought of. I think it has become an issue since the internet has enabled folks to claim it, politicians willing to lie about having served to get votes, or the idiots who are so self-centered that they need attention. The latter are, in what I’ve seen, created their outlandish dress uniforms that mix service insignia, etc, that an military ignorant populace doesn’t recognize as frauds. And who don’t know enough history to realize the Bravo Sierra they are being fed.

To me “stolen valor” is by folks pretending to have served in the military for their own gain in public...getting asked to speak at schools to tell about “their (non) service” or politicians, like many we have seen in the news the last few years.

Sounds like you had Army surplus that was just right for working on the farm, especially the boots and field jacket.

Back in the 70s, I used to buy surplus field jackets at Andy and Bax in SE Portland. You could get a jacket for maybe $15 and it would hold together for a couple of years, longer with a bit of sewing from time to time.

I don’t even visit Portland anymore, but I was a bit sad to learn that Andy and Bax recently closed after 78 years in business.

Wearing it while hiking or at the mall as merely a stylish jacket wouldn’t mean anything, except for a politician it might be questionable, but choosing it to wear for a speech (and during the speech) at a veteran’s event deserves some looking into for motive.

“Additionally, because you were not issued the jacket by the Army, you must have obtained it from someone who was, which means you were aware of its status as an official uniform when you acquired it,” it added.

Not true. You can buy the jacket on the internet. A civilian could easily be ignorant of the fact that this is a uniform item.

Technically, that is just Army apparel and not a uniform.

It’s quite clear what he was attempting to do. Disgusting!

The letter accuses the Democrat politician of giving the impression that he served in the military.

This is one of those things that could be read either way.

On one hand not a uniform, on the other does give that vibe but still, not a uniform. Not right but not illegal.

So I would go for two days in the stocks. I got a bunch of tomatoes people could throw. They are canned but that is just a detail. :)
