Ilion, which is a village in Herkimer County, New York, will be losing its facility in March 2024 according to letters sent to union leaders obtained by the Utica Observer-Dispatch.
It can’t be understated how big of a deal this is: Ilion is the literal birthplace of Remington, as the company was founded there. They’ve been manufacturing guns there since 1816… which is well over 200 years worth of history.
And yes, the facility closure will involve layoffs and swathes of people losing their jobs.
As to who should shoulder the blame for this abrupt closure, local Republican lawmakers put out a joint statement stopping just short of calling out Democrat hostility as the reason RemArms was leaving.
“Unfortunately, like we have seen all too often in New York,” the statement said, according to the Observer-Dispatch, “burdensome regulations, crippling taxes and problematic energy and other policies continue to force businesses and companies to flee the state, taking jobs and livelihoods with them.
“We will continue to communicate with state and federal officials and work to help and assist the company’s employees and their families during this difficult time.”

Hey Leland! I know you’re reading FR!
(He’s our local talker.)
He gets a lot of his material from FR. Keep up the good work!
This has been known for a very long time. Ya don’t just move an entire manufacturing company overnight. There have been threads on FR about this since, I think, last year at least.
Whooo hooo, Remington!
“Ilion is the literal birthplace of Remington.”
Just say America is the Remington’s home now.
And think TEXAS!
.
Gotta say, Ilion is a bleak and depressing mill town under the best of circumstances. Still, Remington has supported a work force there for a long time.
When I lived in Utica people would say, "Utica is the a@@shole of New York State. And Ilion is 10 miles up it." Not quite that bad IMHO.
Think Kansas too. We would love to have Remington Arms Company here.
South Dakota would welcome you open arms (pun intended)!
Then Upstate can remain a state (with its capital still at Albany)
Long known: Yup. It’s been in the works for at least a decade. Remington built a very large, 600,000 sq ft as I recall, new plant space sown south. South Carolina IIRC. One interesting aspect is they’re leaving their old machinery behind. Modernizing. Smith and Wesson did a similar thing in the 90’s. The new machinery displaced a bunch of people. Watch for Remington to bring all their models back in house. That Northeast corridor, ancestral home of the US gun bidness, has outlived its “use by” date.
Visited in October 2004 as part of a trip to the Cooperstown/Central Leatherstocking area of the state. There was a very nice and interesting museum there at the factory.
It is to laugh.
It is to laugh.
Indeed shoot self in foot then blame others.
“ local Republican lawmakers put out a joint statement stopping just short of calling out Democrat hostility”
Why did they stop short?
Republicans are useless. Talk straight and have a pair, the people will listen. No wants to listen to mealy-mouthed wimps who are afraid of their own shadow.
Yep, they’re spineless.
I have a customer in that general vicinity. Was an amazing center of industry, but no more.
There is little if anything left in the Mohawk region.
Time marches on.............forgotten America.
The leaders of NY don’t give a rip about this region.
I feel sorry for blue collar workers when any business relocates, or worse, simply closes.
I liked having SOME firearms made in blue states so there was at least a bit of incentive to not go full lib gun control. Gun makers still vote, even if out numbered. But, that said, the greater State of New York is getting exactly what they deserve and what was completely predictable.
New York and its citizens deserve every bad thing that comes their way..They voted for it and did not persuade their fellow citizens.
I saw the headline and thought “There were electric razors 200 years ago?”
