For years, people have been purchasing solvent traps and following Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) procedures to legally convert the devices into suppressors by filling out an ATF Form 1, paying for a $200 tax stamp, and going through all the checks and balances. The ATF has recently started rejecting all applications to make a suppressor. In a letter written to federal firearms licensees (FFLs) on November 20, the Bureau claims that solvent traps never existed under federal law and most have always been unregistered silencers.
Solvent traps are devices used to catch fluids from cleaning firearms. The device attaches to the barrel of a gun. These traps can be purchased from various retailers, notably Chinese websites like Aliexpress and Wish. Many Americans purchased these items to legally convert solvent traps into suppressors, but the ATF claims the term does not exist in its regulations.
[snip]
The ATF asks anyone with a solvent trap to contact their local field office to divest themselves from the device. If a user is unsure if their solvent trap qualifies as a suppressor, the ATF also asks the owner to contact the field office. The ATF doesn’t mention any immunity for the owner.
AmmoLand News would strongly encourage its readers to seek legal counsel before ever contacting the ATF.

“The ATF asks anyone with a solvent trap to contact their local field office to divest themselves from the device“
How about we tell them to go F themselves instead
Stock up on oil filters and reducing bushings while they are still legal.
Right.
People with a modicum of sense are NOT gonna contact a government agency INFAMOUS for its wanton and execrable abuse of power to let it know that they might be in violation of one of its byzantine regulations.
They should outlaw ear protection too.
If someone needs to be told that, they might be behind the times!
It amazes me that here in the U.S. it is a big deal to own a silencer. In Norway it is quite common
What reducing bushing?
The ATF. Where thugs go to get the chance to murder people and burn children alive. I detest just about every government agency but have particular disdain for the thugs at the ATF.
Reducer; adaptor with a male thread to fit a oil filter and the other end reduced with a threaded female end to attach to a threaded barrel.
Seems like an odd usage of the term "checks and balances".
“Many Americans purchased these items to legally convert solvent traps into suppressors, but the ATF claims the term does not exist in its regulations.”
Does the term bore brush, cleaning rod, or powder solvent exist in it’s regulations. I never bought one of those things, and saw it as a trap for idiots. I still think it was a buffalo jump. Several times I would get an ad for it on Facebook with cute terms explaining it in silencer terms, but pretending it wasn’t.
I reported it again and again to no avail.
Interesting how Facebook was openly pushing silencer kits with no fear. That should have been a clue.
ATF visit mechanic for buying diesel filters...

How the F does the ATF who is buying fuel filters and who reported them?
If you’re skilled enough to convert a solvent trap into ear protection then why not just fabricate it all on your own?
Soon anyone with a block of steel, aluminum, tubes, pipes, rubber bands, or, heaven forbid, a lathe /mill combo. Those can all be used to make machine guns and silencers.
Got it.
The Burn All Toddlers First crowd can go have intimate relations with themselves.
That’s a farce. It’s a straight up silencer, only needing one hole drilled, complete with that spot carefully marked. It is not a diesel filter that has ever existed before.
The bottom line, the ATF and their social media companies pushed these things hard for two or three years.
And that created a bumper crop of morons with homemade unregistered silencers.
One ruling and they were good to go to harass tens of thousands of gun owners.
This whole thing was a total set up.
Suddenly the ATF turns a blind eye to Facebook, marketing 99.5 % complete silencers from China? Through the US mail?
Yeah sure... whatever.
“What reducing bushing?”
The 1/2-28 To 3/4-16 threaded oil filter adapter seems popular enough to pop up near the top of search results which is all I know about it in case you are a FED.
I heard some talk over at the next booth at Waffle House about centering methods and drill bit sizes but that’s the extent of my knowledge.
