Liberty Safe has the backup code to your safe. Okay, if a combo is forgotten and should the only owner of it dies or is incapacitated, the relatives need to access it for family reasons, supplying Liberty Safe with the serial number plus other affidavits they'll release the universal default combo to that safe. There are a lot of hoops to jump through though to get that code. They should have had a court order or some other legal papers to release that combo.

All safe companies have the default code to their safes.

While it would be a drag to cut into your gun safe (or a relatives), it just takes an angle grinder and some time to get into most of the typical ones.

They’d wind up burning our house down before they got into it that way. Was that a Liberty safe?

True. But my home made gun safe has two cans of GOEX black powder with lids off. All it takes is one spark and Kaboom!

I made steel boxes for explosives in a steel fab shop in the oil fields. We learned how to make an almost unbreakable lock system.

I have no idea what brand is in the video. I did a lot of research into various consumer brand safes. Some can be gotten into with little effort, others take a bit more time and effort but with a half hour of effort and the right tools it can be done.

Like most security things, it keeps the honest people out (and children) and makes it more difficult for thieves, and when combined with a home alarm won’t give them enough time to break into it. Also is good for fires to a certain degree.

The possibilities are endless…

Or just pay a locksmith to put in an old fashioned combo lock.

Mine is so old it has a key for the 2 locks. Only used for when the 5-year-old granddaughter visits. Keys even say do not copy.

I’m not worried about the old safe being hacked, but the newer one no longer feels “safe” to me.

I know, old thread... FYI, Liberty has made 2 changes to their safe combo policy. Note that this backup combo is actually a great feature as long as you have the ability to opt out.

Change 1: Liberty Safe has announced a procedure where safe owners can request that the backup combination be removed from their records. https://www.libertysafe.com/pages/combination-removal

Change 2: "We have also revised our policies around cooperation with law enforcement. Going forward, we will require a subpoena that legally compels Liberty Safe to supply access codes but can only do so if these codes still exist in our system."

Note that this backup combo is actually a great feature as long as you have the ability to opt out. It's actually a feature of the Securam lock Liberty uses, as well as in most other electronic safe locks. In Liberty's case, owners weren't even informed the back door existed.
