A California mother sold her young daughter's pet goat to her local county and district’s state fair for $902, but she is now suing them for slaughtering and barbecuing the animal despite her wanting to withdraw its entry for auction.
In April last year, Jessica Long purchased a goat she named Cedar and the animal soon became attached to her 9-year-old daughter, who took care of it every day. On June 24, 2022, Jessica decided to enter the goat into the Shasta District Fair’s junior livestock auction but later changed her mind and requested to take Cedar off the ticket after her daughter desperately wanted the animal back.

Much is unsaid in this story
No surprise here, given much of what populates this state now.
Is her kid a boy or a grill.
Barbecued goat, seasoned with garlic and rosemary and served with collard greens and corn on the cob sounds delicious.
She should have bid $903. The auctioneer’s fee was probably 10%.
you outbid everyone else, and end up only paying the auction fees, it is not rocket science
Lehto’s law podcast lays it out quite well - the fair officials are tyrants.
all that leo activity for a $902 theft?
is it because the buyer is a dem state senator?
“is it because the buyer is a dem state senator?”
Nope
Got to teach those 9 year olds a lesson. Whatever you love, fat men will come and take it from you and eat it.
“Is her kid a boy or a grill.”
ROFL!!!
“It was very good with mustard” WC Fields
That was one expensive bbq.
Oops.
“...but if she sold the animal, she has no say in what happens to it after that.”
She tried to cancel before the animal was sold, but the auction refused her request.
The rest is outrageous. I hope she takes them to the cleaners.
Now, there are certain ones here, who are unwilling to accept anything but the absolute fulfillment of the letter of the law, as if they have never attempted to mitigate the absolute fulfillment of the letter of the law in their own lives.
These people are usually categorized as cold-eyed, cold-hearted, anal-retentive idiots.
From what I can tell, the kid was a grill(ed).
Having seller’s remorse and attempting to work out an agreement is one thing, but that’s a completely separate deal with new circumstances and negotiations.
Stealing the animal from the buyer and absconding after the deal is concluded is simply wrong and not an appropriate solution. One option, as pointed out already, is to participate in the auction and win the goat back.
Finally, let’s not forget the innocent and otherwise uninvolved winner of the auction: she stole their property.

Oh, yeah, it’s galling that she filed a lawsuit.
