Drone footage released by Ukrainian forces on Saturday (March 18) purportedly shows a Russian grenade launcher being destroyed in Bakhmut. Ukraine’s Luhansk Border Detachment released the video it said shows the destruction of a Russian AGS-17 grenade launcher. Ukrainian forces outside the battered eastern city of Bakhmut are managing to keep Russian units at bay so ammunition, food, equipment and medicines can be delivered to defenders, the Ukrainian army said on Saturday.

A Ukrainian official likened Russian President Vladimir Putin to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for visiting the scene of his crimes in Mariupol, one of the cities heavily destroyed in Ukraine since the war began last February.
“Another dictator also visited Mariupol once. We know how his story ended. Hitler visited Army Group South HQ at Mariupol, Ukraine in December 1941.
‘Many historians and contemporaries claim that it was here that Hitler first realized the war was lost’ - WarHistoryOnline,” Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Mariupol, a strategic seaport along the Azov Sea, was seized during the Nazi occupation of Soviet Ukraine in World War II from 1941 to 1943. The city was severely damaged at that time as Nazi Germany sent troops into the Soviet Union across a wide front in an ultimately doomed invasion that cost well over 20 million Soviet military and civilian lives before the end of the war.
Eighty years have passed since the Nazi occupation of Mariupol, but the city yet again experienced war when Putin’s forces launched heavy offensives last year and left thousands of residents without food, water, and utilities.
Allegations of war crimes were centered on Mariupol, which fell to Russia last May, where a drama theater sheltering women and children was hit by Russian artillery earlier on in the invasion. Outside the theater, on each end, were the words “Children” painted in Russian.
Meanwhile, the deputy mayor of Mariupol, Sergei Orlov, said at the time that up to 1,200 people sought refuge in the theater. Some women and children were able to escape, but hundreds died.
Putin visited the city on Saturday, a day after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest over alleged war crimes. While touring the city, the Russian president was being briefed on reconstruction efforts by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, Reuters reported, citing state television.
The Russian president also visited Crimea on Saturday to celebrate the ninth anniversary of its annexation from Ukraine. The Eastern European peninsula was also the site of alleged crimes committed by the Russian Federation as it was involved in human rights violations and a crackdown on dissent in Crimea, according to Amnesty International, an international organization focused on human rights.
“The criminal always returns to the crime scene. As the civilized world announces the arrest of the “war director” (VV Putin) in case of crossing its borders, the murderer of thousands of Mariupol families came to admire the ruins of the city & graves. Cynicism & lack of remorse,” Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the Head of the Office of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, tweeted Sunday.
The ICC has issued an arrest warrant against Putin for allegedly unlawfully abducting and transporting Ukrainian children and teens to Russia where many have been adopted by Russian families. An arrest warrant was also issued for Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.
It is unlikely that Putin will face charges as long as he is still in power, but opponents of Russia still think the ICC arrest warrant is a positive move. The ICC relies on member nations to carry out arrests, and those accused could easily avoid traveling to countries where they could be turned over.
In addition, the fight between Russian and Ukrainian forces has extended to major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Odessa, and most recently intensified in Bakhmut.
Newsweek reached out to the Russian foreign affairs ministry via email for comment.
Officials in the West and in Ukraine continue to insist that a counter-attack is coming. I have to assume this is a desperate psychological operation. I find it difficult to believe that responsible military leaders and planners would be publicly tipping their hand about what they intend to do and where they intend to strike. General Eisenhower and General Montgomery did not blather on in the press about their upcoming invasion in Normandy. They obfuscated their moves and made masterful use of deception. Ditto for Marshal Zhukov and General Konstantin Rokossovsky in their planning and execution of Operation Bagration.
I think the United States and its NATO partners are making a deadly mistake in underestimating Russian intelligence about the disposition and readiness of Ukrainian forces. What is clear is that the Russians are not saying anything about their plans for destroying the Ukrainian Army. But I am certain that such plans exist and are being executed according to a schedule dictated by Russia.

Moscow’s decision to change the capital of a region in southern Ukraine to an occupied city likely shows Russia believes it may not succeed with planned “major objectives in the near future,” according to a new intelligence assessment.
On March 3, Russian authorities said the city of Melitopol would replace Zaporizhzhia as capital of the Zaporizhzhia region.
Russia’s defense ministry declared it had captured Melitopol just two days after the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. It was the first major settlement to be taken over by Putin’s forces as the full-scale war got underway and was seen as a key breakthrough at the time.
On March 6, Russian STATE MEDIA carried reports from a Kremlin official who said the city of Zaporizhzhia will once again become the regional capital, but only once Russian forces capture it.
The Southern Oblast was ILLEGALLY annexed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in September 2022, but Russian forces have not gained control over Zaporizhzhia city and its around 700,000 residents. The city is located in the northern area of the Oblast - around 22 miles from the front line - but Russian forces control parts of the south of the region.
The “quiet declaration” of the alternative capital city has significance, according to the British defense ministry.
Writing in its daily update on Sunday, the U.K. government department said the decision to change capitals is likely a “tacit acknowledgment” for Russia that its forces are not expected to succeed with “previously planned major objectives in the near future.”

The defense ministry did not elaborate on what these predetermined “major objectives” may be, but Western analysts say Russian forces have focused on the front lines in eastern Ukraine, rather than pushing through the south.
In the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, Putin’s forces are working to maintain their frontline positions and secure Russian-held territory against strikes, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think tank said on Saturday.
But in the annexed territories, Russian-installed authorities are working to “russify” Ukrainian residents, the ISW said. Drone strikes on Friday evening and Saturday morning also targeted Zaporizhzhia, the ISW added.

I believe the current defensive lines are close to what the borders will be when Ukraine sues for peace this year. They will flat out run out of manpower, and unless Nato sends in troops, they will be better off with the current border, than losing it all. In the end, I wouldnt be surprised if up to 1 million soldiers die on both sides, but Russia has 3 times the amount to spare and Ukraine isnt getting a 7 to 1 kill ratio as they claim. After its over, the elites/shwaub group can turn their focus on starvation for the rest of us.
