Stellantis to Shutter Jeep Cherokee Plant Over “Increasing Cost Related to the Electrification of the Automotive Market”
The Liberty Daily ^ | 12/10/2022 | JD Rucker

Multinational automaker Stellantis, which formed last year in a merger between Italian-American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French PSA Group, is shuttering a plant in Illinois that produces the Jeep Cherokee.

The company dropped a statement for local media:

Our industry has been adversely affected by a multitude of factors like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the global microchip shortage, but the most impactful challenge is the increasing cost related to the electrification of the automotive market.

Stellantis has taken a number of actions to stabilize production and improve efficiency at its North American facilities to preserve affordability and customer satisfaction in terms of quality.

While it considers other avenues to optimize operations, Stellantis has made the decision to idle the Belvidere (Illinois) Assembly plant effective Feb. 28, 2023.

This difficult but necessary action will result in indefinite layoffs, which are expected to exceed six months and may constitute a job loss under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. As a result, WARN notices have been issued to both hourly and salaried employees. The company will make every effort to place indefinitely laid-off employees in open full-time positions as they become available.

The company also is working to identify other opportunities to repurpose the Belvidere facility and has no additional details to share at this time

This will be a huge disaster for already beleaguered Rockford, IL, which has been suffering from post-industrial decay for 50 years. Very sad.

Sad, but Biden doesn’t care. Biden has helped drive up the demand for green inputs (like Lithium) creating mayhem in production. Yet these fools will reelect Biden and those horrible Senate members and governors.

You can’t fix stupid and the media will never discuss it.

Idiots like Biden and Newsom are pushing, pushing, pushing automobile manufacturers to produce EV‘s.

Never mind the fact that most Americans don’t want them.

Closing a Jeep plant because EVs cost so much to make? Makes perfect sense to me.

How about stop pissing money away on EVs that aren’t going to sell and concentrate on your core business?

Yep. Socialism/communism will always be popular with people who think they can get something for nothing. Also, see Tagline.

I'm not understanding...

Are they closing because they were producing ICE Cherokees that couldn't compete against EVs, or,

are they closing because they were producing EVs and couldn't compete because of the high costs of producing EVs?

Government self inflicted decay.

Ford is building a large battery factory in Tennessee. Probably not because that’s what customers want to buy but what the government will allow them to sell.

Automobile manufacturers have been coerced and bribed into the EV scam. Most of them are losing market base and money due to the scam and now have to depend on government subsidies to sell the vehicles. At some point, they are going to have to say “no more” or just go out of business all together.

The percentage of drivers who want EVs is miniscule compared to the number of those who want and NEED ICE vehicles. Forcing the technology that is not yet ready for prime time on manufacturers and consumers is going to be the death of the EV industry. The technology is just not yet there and the government trying to force it on people will not make it more efficient or workable at this time.

I know two people who purchased EVs and were so disappointed in their performance and charging time, that they had sold them after less than a year and returned to ICE vehicles. Thankfully, in both instances, some other sucker purchased them (one was the original dealer) and their financial losses were minimal.

The car manufacturers have no choice. CAFE standards are going so high that electric cars HAVE to be promoted, just as money losing sub-compacts were in the 80s.

Jeep should refuse to play the game. Presidents come and go. Automobile buyers continue to purchase vehicles.

When you elect Democrats and their fellow travelers you get less competition, and higher prices. More misery, less product.
It is easily provable.
