I know that for a fact. My best bud growing up was from Valencia, Spain. They DO NOT think of themselves as hispanics. Heck, their version of Spanish (Castilian) sounds more elegant.

A couple of observations. One, it’s not really about color anymore. The country is way past that. If you are mainstream culture, or one of the subcultures that blend well with mainstream culture, they consider you white.
Their beef is with mainstream culture, to the degree that it reflects the traditional values of ordinary people. They use race as a wedge against it. If you are black, but you move easily in the cultural mainstream, if you are moral and self sufficient, they hate you maybe even more than anyone. A Hispanic who adheres to his catholic roots, and does not let the left speak for him suddenly is “white” in their eyes whatever the color of his pigment.
Race is their obsession, but it is always in the context of driving a wedge against traditional morality, traditional work ethic, and traditional families. That’s what they hate, and race is just a convenient and sadly effective weapon against it.
What they’re revealing is their own racism. I have witnessed this myself: they are determined to refuse whiteness to Hispanics tout court. It’s not so much a liberal phenomenon as it is a Protestant phenomenon. Of course liberalism and Protestantism are pretty much the same thing.
The Democratic Party is and has always been obsessed with race. They assume everyone shares their rather strange obsession.

If you mean the classical liberalism of the founding fathers as being Protestant, you are correct. If you mean that Protestant Christians are progtards, you ignore that evangelical Protestants are the most right wing religious group in the United States. Meanwhile the cafeteria Catholics here in the northeast ain’t exactly right wingers or devotees of the founding principles of this nation. Of course cafeteria Catholics produce agnostic and atheist children and “devout Catholics” are a tiny minority as well.
Lots of American Catholics are functionally Protestant in all of their religious and philosophical assumptions, but owing to the disgraceful state of Catholic education, they don’t even know it.
If you can recite The Apostle’s Creed and compare it to what Protestants believe and it is the same, then, yes I could be a functionally Protestant, but I have a feeling that won’t happen.
That Creed is the heart of Catholicism as I understand it and believe.
I grew up Spanish in Asia and Europe, and never heard that Spain was considered non-white. Not, that is, until I came to the US.
The US is very confused on the matter because nearly all the Spanish speakers they have ever seen are from the former colonies of our empire. There have been very few direct immigrants from Spain to the US, historically. Had there been as many immigrants from Spain as there were from Italy it would have been something else.

My parents came from Italy,right next door to Spain and were not considered non white.
That seems very unfair.
Welcome to America. Remember though, Italians did not have an easy time of assimilating, but they worked at it very hard.

Spanish is a beautiful language.
I have less trouble understanding someone from Peru or Chile than I do someone from Mexico or other parts of Central America. It might be due in part to education and social class. Many of the Mexicans and Central Americans are lower class and less educated and articulate. I have a great deal less trouble understanding a Mexican radio or TV announcer (though they do tend to talk rather fast).
