Scheller: The American Military Is Promoting Cowardice
humanevents.com ^ | July 28, 2022 | LtCol Stuart Scheller

Following the Afghanistan evacuation, I was imprisoned for publicly challenging military leadership. Nearly a year later, Americans still don’t appreciate the dire implications emanating from foundational issues in the U.S. military. During critical moments when military leaders should be standing for American values, we instead find impressively dressed old men nodding “yes.” When that unconditional obedience leads to disaster – as it did in Afghanistan and Benghazi – military leaders focus on managing political narratives to save their own careers. In doing so, they miss timely assessments of failure, and inadvertently squander the sacrifices of selfless young servicemembers.

Some blame the problem on “woke generals.” But that’s a catch-all term misdiagnosing the root problem: the American military is currently led by senior general officers lacking moral courage. Most Americans don’t understand how this quality is actively filtered out by the military promotion system. Officers are easily influenced, focusing on pleasing superiors for high markings on subjective evaluations. When senior military leaders focus on pleasing their bosses for forty years (the time required to make four-star general) it’s not surprising they consistently acquiesce to political whims at the expense of building effective combat power.

In practice, they tolerate, even incentivize, silence during military failures. Thus, it’s not surprising that General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and General Kenneth McKenzie, the theater commander, remain entrenched in their position that the Afghanistan evacuation was a success. To say otherwise would end their career, or worse, threaten lucrative post-service positions within the oligopoly of government contracting firms.

Without real leadership, the cracks in the military foundation continue widening. The obvious problems cannot go unidentified much longer without great risk to the American people. Americans desperately need courageous leaders willing to confront and reform our deeply flawed systems. Fix the leaders, fix the culture, and watch as all other problems self-correct. The American military truly finds itself in a crisis of command.

A crisis being purposely worsened by introducing wokeness into the military.

I can’t imagine us winning a war against anyone.

This guy had a lot of potential until he started attacking Trump and the MAGA movement. He criticized Wokeism and then veered left and embraced the very thing he criticized. Too late to take it back now. He made enemies with everyone, including the America he supposedly fought for.

Yes, these fools are successfully doing what no foreign enemy or combination of enemies has ever done — defeat the American military. Defeat and destroy. Americans will be shocked at the outcome of our next war.

This dude’s got no credibility if he thinks the Afghanistan operation became a fiasco when the evacuation was fouled up. By the time the decision was made to vacate that dump, the U.S. military campaign had already lasted longer than the American Revolution, the Civil War, and both World Wars COMBINED.

Sad but true. Bunch of bureaucrat careerists.

There are such things as force multipliers. Wokeness is of course a force divider. We still might be able to push around small countries like Malta. But anything much bigger would probably result in a quagmire at best.

Side note to Malta: Nothing personal, guys.

We are already at great risk from open borders, that apparently we cannot use the military to defend.

Lacking moral courage is putting the best possible spin on it.

We are living in bizarre times. Here’s another example.

At every company where I worked for over thirty years, we were all trained on CPR and how to handle fire extinguishers. The final two companies I worked for removed all fire extinguishers and the emergency medical equipment which included an automatic defibrillator. When I asked why I was told that in the event of a fire, the company did not want the liability of someone staying to fight the fire. As to the defib machines, well, too much liability.

Some years prior there was a small fire that could have been devastating. An employee grabbed an extinguisher and put it out before any serious damage was done. No muss. No fuss. But now, a small fire is almost guaranteed to become a big fire because management is a bunch of cowards.

As to the defib, it was better to let someone die than to risk having a computer-controlled machine certified by government agencies try to save them? (Incidentally, it’s far more likely someone in management will die because they were, on average, much older than the workers.)

As one astute Freeper recently pointed out: the Korean War was the last U.S. military campaign against an enemy that didn’t wear sandals. That was 70 freaking years ago.

When I heard Schaller was a staunch liberal, all of my outrage about his treatment by the military went out the window. He voted for an incompetent and corrupt stooge like Biden, which shows he has poor judgment. He can’t complain when Biden’s military dumps on him because he voted for the CinC.

American Officers come from the American culture.

Moral courage is something that is hard to teach young Officers.

I’m not sure that it can be taught after someone becomes 18 years old.

A failure of moral courage can get Soldiers killed just as quickly as a failure of physical courage.
