TThe U.S. Space Force announced that the service’s new intelligence agency, the National Space Intelligence Center, will see its first day in operation on Friday, according to the center’s deputy director.
The newly-formed Space Delta 18, named in reference to the NSIC’s status as the 18th U.S. intelligence agency, will operate the center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, according to a statement released Wednesday. Col. Marqus Randall will oversee the NSIC’s mandate to track foreign capabilities and threats in space.
“It has been a long time coming but after two decades of trials and tribulations, June 24th will see the activation of Space Delta 18, the National Space Intelligence Center,” said Deputy Director John Gass in a social media post.

Before anyone gets too bent out of shape over the creation of yet another intelligence agency, this is a DOD agency and is kind of suborinate to/part of the Defense Intelligence Agency. But, each service has its own intelligence subagencies to provide expert analysis, means of intelligence collection and surveillance and support the operational and acquisition needs of that particular service. It will be colocated with the existing National Air and Space Intelligence Center, or NASIC, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio a U.S. Air Force’s service intelligence center.

This is no big deal.
Intelligence is a military AFSC/MOS/Rating. Every battalion and Wing on up has an S2—Staff Intelligence—that can vary in size depending on the size.
It’s not a big deal, therefore, for a whole new military service to have an Intel command. I served in USAF ESC/AFIC/AIA and the DIA. Each of these organizations had specific missions that are part of the overall capabilities of themselves.
I would think the US Space Force would need to know about advances in ChiCom satellites, space weapons, operations in space, space order of battle, etc. Same with the Russians.
BTW, Iran just launched a satellite on a two-stage rocket. That’s kind of a big thing when dealing with military operations in space. We need to know telemetry data and other aspects here. We do this by listening, and the listening platforms work for Intel orgs. It never ends.
Since this change is being done under Biden’s kink Administration can we assume they’ll be looking for ‘white supremacists’ in space?
And buying thousands of rounds of ammunition?
