Drone Hits Fuel Train Deep Behind Russian Lines
Video shows a compilation of Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drone strikes against Russian military targets, and among the clips is a strike against a fuel train behind Russian lines.
On Feb. 27, 2022, open source intelligence channels noticed a hot spot on satellite imagery indicating a train’s fuel cars had exploded or burned up on the Crimean peninsula, deep into Russian-held territory.
It’s not confirmed that this is the strike shown in the video.
Regardless of the exact location, this strike points to an obvious air defense capability gap within the Russian military. The fuel trains would be kept nowhere near the front line fighting, which means the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone seems to fly unhindered behind Russian lines and is either undetectable or untrackable by Russian air defenses.
The drone is only able to carry four munitions at a time, and given the massive columns of Russian military vehicles moving into Ukraine, even continuous drone strikes may have limited effect on the invasion. However, this strike on a fuel train may not be an isolated incident and may also be one of the reasons Russian military vehicles have been recorded out of fuel all across Ukraine.

I worked for General Dynamics on the Abrams tank. It is one thirsty MF. The army wanted to upgrade the engine and transmission, but Congress insisted that the army use the money set aside for that to buy more, new tanks which went straight into storage. The drivetrain is an early 70’s design and a redesign and retrofit would have made the tank at least competitive with the latest German made tanks. But, no, they had to buy new ones to keep the line up and running despite the fact that the line is government owned and is made for lengthy shutdowns as the work crew are GD contractors. The Army has wanted to get rid of the tank to my direct knowledge of attending meetings with them as far back as 2001. The reason was, although the tank is amazing and almost impossible to kill small drones were already being designed and deployed that could kill the tank in its most vulnerable place, it’s fuel truck. Fuel trucks are vulnerable to almost any munitions and the army knew that eventually there would be no “battle line.” The battle would take place wherever you or your assets were.

For this reason, although there are still lots of tanks in the world, nations are not spending enough to upgrade them as would be required if they were still considered front line equipment. Tanks are being replaced by soldier carried assets like the Javelin missile, at 44 pounds and a hundred thousand dollars it’s much more efficient and harder to knock out than a multi-million-dollar tank...or, rather the tank’s fuel truck.
The train has been identified as being in the Crimea when it was attacked.

Very cool. I hope the shot of hitting the train of tanker cars was the 2nd or 3rd shot at the train. You’d want to take out the engine(s) first or damage the track at either end of the train to pin it there where you can get at it. Just shooting a car in the middle of the train wouldn’t be a good first shot, the forward half could take off and try to escape.

Once the tanks and armored cars get inside the cities, how in the hell are the Russians going to refuel?
Tankers are easy targets that you don’t even need Javelins to eliminate.
Waiting for them to attack that long convoy.
