When I was a kid growing up in Southeast Montana in the 1970s we never saw a coyote up close because the second they saw a person they ran the other direction like they were on fire. It is because we shot them on sight and they knew it.
The closest encounter I had with a coyote was seeing it a half mile away running in the opposite direction.
We took care of problem dogs too. When I took over my friends paper route I literally watched dogs jumping out of their fenced yard to run away from me because they associated the paper bag I was wearing with my friend who took no shit from them. Once a doberman was trying to climb over a wooden fence to attack my friend and he took a club made from a 4x4 and shattered its jaw. Dogs either just did not like that kid or they really liked how he tasted.
I live in Phoenix now and when I go out the front door at night I practically step on the damn things and the coyotes are perfectly comfortable with staring at me from 100 feet away.
Weakness kills.

I don’t know about coyotes, but when my dog suddenly starts biting at his tail it means he needs a fresh flea treatment.
Pretty sure the other aggression comes from people not paying the food Danegeld when they pass through the coyote’s territory. They are a thuggish vermin.
