The Oregon Standoff: Understanding LaVoy Finicum’s Death & the Management of BLM Land

When one talks about the Bundy Family, the first thing that springs to mind is the standoff in Nevada in 2014. However, perhaps even more important is the standoff and occupation at Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Indeed, the two events are often conflated because Ammon Bundy is the son of Cliven Bundy, the man who stood up to the federal government over “grazing fees” on Bureau of Land Management land.

The occupation was a highlight for both the militia and the sovereign citizen movement as well as proponents of states’ rights. The main argument from those occupying the land is that the federal government is mandated by law to turn over the land that they manage to the individual states in which the land sits. This, they argued, was particularly true of the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forestry Service, and United States Fish and Wildlife Service land.

The 2016 Oregon standoff was over two ranchers convicted of arson on federal lands – despite the fact that the men, a father and son pair named Dwight and Steven Dwight Hammond, did not want their support.

Harney County in rural eastern Oregon is one of the largest counties in the United States by land mass, but one of the smallest when it comes to population. With a mere 7,700 people, cows outnumber humans in Harney by a factor of 14-to-1. Nearly three quarters of the land in the county is federally managed. The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established by then-President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. It’s a large area of the county and surrounding area at 187,757 acres.

Moral of the story: the Feds will infiltrate your organization, perform dipschittery in your name, then kill you.

I have known the Hammonds since I was a girl (70+ years). My mom and Anna Hammond were best friends the whole of their lives. The Hammonds have one of highest standards of ethics I have ever met and that includes all of them.
They were the first people I ever knew (away from my own family) who were “Truthers”, a word uncommonly used because most Americans in gov are such consummate liars.

It absolutely blows me away to think the US Gov would behave as if “The Dwights” were subversives.

The US Gov is out of control as it has been for many, many years, and should be completely redone after determining what it is each department and section and group should actually be doing. Fire the rest of the people who have been typing one with one digit a day and let them starve...grifters that they are.

The only other alternative is to secede and that we should do and we should bring the initial Constitution with us and begin anew. It wouldn’t take us long to figure out what we and our new nation could do without in terms of laws and subversives.

Thank you for that response.

My understanding was that the feud with the BLM originated with environmental studies involving the Hammond (and other Harney Co. rancher’s) land that indicated migratory water fowl thrived on land cultivated by ranchers and preferred it to overgrown/feral land the BLM was promoting.

If there is ever a popular movement to remove some part of this country from the federal government’s grasp – and it is successful – then those separatists will call themselves Americans long after Washington D.C. has abandoned the label.
