Drakes raid destroyed early St Augustine structures and lthere were casualties on both sides and the raid caused Spain to abandon its settlements in the Carolinas further north

But Spain stayed in Saint Augustine till 1821 except for 1763-1783 when the Brits held it briefly

The famous fort was built late 1600s

Privateer Drake was no saint but neither were the Spanish or French

The French also vied fo take this Matanzas River outlet and fought the Spanish with brutal religious overtones given the times
