Just one more reason why these hearings should not be held. Well, two reasons, actually, that the Democrats in the Senate provided to Mitch McConnell and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham on Monday. Two glaring reasons why the Judiciary Committee hearings on the Amy Coney Barrett nomination should be cancelled now, today, and the nomination should immediately be taken to the Senate floor for an up-or-down vote.
Reason #1 was provided by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who told fawning fake reporters that he and his fellow Democrats would boycott any votes in committee or on the floor related to the nomination. Ok, well, given that, whats the point of hearings? If every member of the minority party has made up his or her mind on the nomination and will not even show up to vote on it, why allow this farce to go on?
As Ive pointed out before, there is no requirement for the Judiciary Committee to hold these hearings. They are a matter of Senate process, not constitutional law. In the past, the point of holding such hearings was to vet the nominee and allow the committee to render a studied judgment on his or her qualifications for the job. The point of that judgment was so that the Committee as a whole could issue a recommendation to the full Senate on whether or not to confirm the nominee. Given that not a single member of the committee Republican or Democrat has an open mind on the incredibly well-qualified nominee, there is no point to holding these hearings.
Besides, Judge Barrett was just vetted for her seat on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals three short years ago, and was confirmed on a bipartisan vote. How much more does this committee need to know?
This takes us to Reason #2: The Democrats made a strategic decision at Mondays hearing to simply turn it into a campaign event revolving around the Affordable Care Act, aka, Obamacare. Every Democrat on the Committee used their 10 minute opening statements as a commercial for the ACA and why they think it should be retained. Every one of them read comments written for them by some staffer, all based on the same ACA-centered talking points. Only a handful even bothered to discuss the nomination and Judge Barretts qualifications in any real way.
Its a campaign event, not a hearing. Theyre focusing on the ACA instead of their real driving issue abortion on demand, including infanticide after birth because Obamacare polls more favorably for them than abortion does. It really is that simple.
Thus, lacking any cogent, legitimate arguments why Judge Barrett should not be confirmed, they stage a campaign rally and then promise to take their ball and go home like that pathetic little kid who lived down the street from you when you were in second grade.
McConnell and Graham should take this childish behavior by their friends on the other side as an opportunity to invite them all to go home. If they wish to stage campaign events related to Obamacare, then they should pay for them from their own campaign funds. There is no valid reason for Senate Republicans to enable them and allow them to conduct this joint rally on government time.
This farce should end, now.
That is all.
This is Lindsey Graham’s s_show. He invited the pigs to the barn and we wonder why they behave so poorly?
Those two things are necessary to expose the democrats, some of which are running for re-election.
It is time to get the cameras out of the hearing rooms. They have become tools for the parties to get funding for themselves, so make the hearing rooms what they are supposed to be: places where our elected representatives and Senators to examine people and issues, to gather facts, and to pass laws to benefit the People of this country. They should not be used as objects to further their own interests. They should not be used to enrich the Media. They should not be echo chambers for themselves..
I disagree. The hearings will help pull voters away from the Democrats.
I have been saying this all along. It takes away from the campaign and Barrett get raked through the coals for no good reason.
+100 I agree with you!
So put the decent women thought torture? This is why in the post Trump era the GOP is in deep trouble.
They can't decide which bathroom to use, why do you think this will make a difference how they vote?
Yes! She was just vetted a couple years ago and theres been nothing against her since. Lets stop the circus and get her confirmed now!
"I want you to use my words against me. If there's a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said, 'Let's let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination, and you could use my words against me and you'd be absolutely right."
The optics of that statement, combined with an end run around "process" would simply serve to feed that narrative that the Republicans are "ramming through" the confirmation of an otherwise "unworthy" candidate.
For better or worse, we need to let the Republicans make the case for her confirmation to the American People. We can only pray they don't, yet again, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I agree 1000%!
Mitch will stick to the process as always even if he and Linda lose their seats.
I wish one of the Republican Senators would take there 5 minutes to expose the MYTH of Obamacare.
At it’s inception 30,000,000 people were NOT even covered by it.
It has INCREASED insurance costs
People COULD NOT keep their PLAN or DOCTOR
Some States offer ONE lousy OPTION
There are no good Democrats. All the good ones have left the Party. What’s left is the rabble and human waste. Yes, the hearings should stop and Barrett’s nomination moved immediately for a vote. That is what normal people would do. But remember, we are dealing with the cowardly GOPee and it would take more courage than the GOPee Senate has collectively. The next RAT trick will be no quorum to hold the vote. What will the GOPee do then? Hide and watch.
The up side is the display the dems are putting on - every time they do this more folks get to see how disgusting and empty they are.
She’s tough and smart enough to garner some satisfaction that evil is no match for a righteous person who has donned the Armor of God:
“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devils schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lords people.”
I heard someone posted a “Pray for Pelosi” Facebook entry and referenced Psalms 109-8: “Let his (her) days be few; [And] let another take his (her) office.”
“
Dems beating up on a housewife is a great image for the Repubs.
This is how will will get no more conservatives to volunteer for SCOTUS.
“I wish one of the Republican Senators would take there 5 minutes to expose the MYTH of Obamacare.’’
Obamacare was a scam to expand Medicaid. Nothing more.
