This article pertains ONLY TO WEARING MASKS INSIDE A HOSPITAL.
“I notice that NO ONE here seems to answer as to why Taiwan, the first country to require universal mask wearing, also has virtually wiped out the virus.”
So, you think coincidence is causation?
The dumbing down of America on display. Science is no longer taught in schools. If you “feel it”, it must be true.
Hong Kong is another great example. Right on the doorstep of China, lots of Chinese tourists, very high density of people (much moreso than the US), primarily mass transit, etc.
Look at the stats..SEVEN total deaths to-date. 0.9 deaths per million people. Now compare to the US. 137,000+ deaths. 416 deaths per million people.
Yeah, I expect many will simply say the numbers are BS. But remember - a lot of that data is coming from states with Republic governors, so...
How did Hong Kong do it?
95%+ reported mask usage - inside AND outside.
We all want our economy back, Trump re-elected, etc. The ONE thing we can do to get the virus under control is to stop spreading it. And the way we stop spreading it is to use masks - just like every single other country that has gotten the virus under control..
Yes. among people who know how to wear masks and do not touch or play with them. clean masks every use. With meticulous hand sanitization and they still dont work. Now imagine what the dirty ill fitting snot rags people are wearing in the grocery store are doing
Next you’ll be advocating burqas. No way will I wear a face shield. I keep safe distance and that should be sufficient.

From the full article.
“More compelling is the possibility that wearing a mask may reduce the likelihood of transmission from asymptomatic and minimally symptomatic health care workers with Covid-19 to other providers and patients.
This concern increases as Covid-19 becomes more widespread in the community. We face a constant risk that a health care worker with early infection may bring the virus into our facilities and transmit it to others.
Transmission from people with asymptomatic infection has been well documented, although it is unclear to what extent such transmission contributes to the overall spread of infection.1-3”
and the only difference between us and Hong Kong is masking. right.....
This study covers wide-spread use in HOSPITALS! Imagine the uselessness of masks in the general public?
In this country, there remains a strong independent streak among people with the ability to read and reason.
And then, there are people like me: Happier to just go along with the crowd.... at least, for now.
Thank you!
You were the first to post a paragraph from the full article.
Sincerely,
Fishtank PhD Mechanical Engineering (aerosol science)
I’m wearing mine in crowds and I won’t be bullied out of it.
It’s 105 degrees where I live. No way am I wearing a f-ing mask outside.
as is your right. I choose not to wear it in crowds and I wont be bullied into it Thats what freedom is about
Precisely. In a hospital. Where sick people are. Sick people some which are infected with COVID. This is the setting they say masks are ineffective.
Logical assumption, in an alternate setting - like anywhere other than a hospital- a mask is even less useful.
Yes.... it does. Perhaps, you missed THESE lines?
"It is also clear that masks serve symbolic roles. Masks are not only tools, they are also talismans that may help increase health care workers perceived sense of safety, well-being, and trust in their hospitals. Although such reactions may not be strictly logical, we are all subject to fear and anxiety, especially during times of crisis. One might argue that fear and anxiety are better countered with data and education than with a marginally beneficial mask, particularly in light of the worldwide mask shortage, but it is difficult to get clinicians to hear this message in the heat of the current crisis. Expanded masking protocols greatest contribution may be to reduce the transmission of anxiety, over and above whatever role they may play in reducing transmission of Covid-19."
This study was regarding the wide spread wearing of masks in HOSPITALS. The benefit out in a general public setting of low density is exceedingly small. So small, if we apply this standard, mask wearing will NEVER go away.
The article and the part you cite refers to workers in hospitals.
My neighbor whos spouse is at end of life care with hospice just told me the nurse told her that two of his nurse friends are hospitalized with respiratory acidosis and one is in kidney failure from wearing a mask.
Maybe because theres not been any riots across the country?
The authors caved. Their post-publication comments are explicitly contradicted in the articles opening paragraphs.
Its not an election year in Taiwan.
