My favorite books as a child; finally got my 9 year old granddaughter interested in them, and she also loves them!

A fine program. I always watched it when it was new, and still catch repeats from time to time.
At my advanced age, I finally got around to reading “Little House on the Prairie” earlier this year. I enjoyed it. It didn’t seem like what I think of when I hear the term “children’s book.” I think anyone could like it.
It was filmed in Simi Valley, my friends and I rode our Dirt Bikes and drove our 4 wheel drives all through those mountains, we used to go to the set all the time.
My friend has pics of 12 of us in the Saloon Drinking Beer at 1 AM with our 4 trucks out front and it is Snowing, a couple inches on the ground.
A great nation this used to be. Time to start over.
We drove by her house last weekend.

I’m currently reading “Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder”. Interesting biography.
I read my set of Little House books until they fell apart. My friend, whose mom was a librarian, was also a fan. Her parents took us on a trip to Walnut Grove and DeSmet when we were around 10 years old. For fun she gave me a Little House trivia book when we were in college. We got all the answers right. Bottom line: I knew them forwards and backwards.
When I read them to my children, I was surprised at how much went over my head as a child. I enjoyed reading them as an adult. Sadly for me, my girls never got into the books like I did.
I want to read some more of them. I use a Kindle, so they’re easy to get. They are a nice escape when the world gets too nuts for me.
That is how fast immigration can change a culture.
Laura Ingalls Wilder lived only a couple of miles from here for around a year. There is still an Ingalls living at the same location.
My GGrandfather performed a wedding for two of the characters in the book.

Yeah, her dad was kind of crazy, heading out into Indian territory with a woman and two small girls.
Same experience as you. When I was a kid, I saw the dad in the way Laura did, talking about how wise he was. As an adult, I thought, "Dude, you took a wagon across a frozen river with your wife and kids on it during the spring thaw?"
A difficult thing for me with the TV series was that Michael Landon played Pa as being a typical dad, when the real father obviously loved his family, but was quite the wild man. Also, in the books, his beard was almost a character, Laura talked about it so much. I couldn't get used to Pa Ingalls being clean shaven.

I recently watched the episodes where Mary goes blind. I was curious because it was a television milestone: it was the first time in television history where a major character becomes disabled and never recovers.
The episode dealt with the question of how God could allow such things to happen. In real life, after Mary went blind, Laura became her eyes and would describe everything to her as they travelled. Soon, she developed an amazing skill of at describing things. That skill helped her become an excellent author and millions have read the books and millions more have seen the show. And Mary had a good life and played organ in her church.
I recently read “Prairie Fires” too. Fascinating! Have you come to the part about her adult daughter? She was something else . . .
I wonder if the Sioux said that when Little Houses starting springing up on the Prairie.
