How Young People Make Decisions in Choosing College
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | June 12, 2020 | Jenna A. Robinson

For years, college-for-all was the dominant narrative of pundits, parents, and high school guidance counselors. And most people interpreted that directive to mean that everyone should attend a four-year university.

That’s starting to change. I hear more every day about apprenticeships, community colleges, certificate programs, and coding academies. But students still need guidance when making crucial decisions about what they will learn and how they will enter the labor market.

That’s where a new book by Michael B. Horn and Bob Moesta comes in. Choosing College: How to Make Better Learning Decisions Throughout Your Life, published last fall, provides a new framework for thinking about postsecondary education options. As the authors say in the introduction, they want potential students to ask a foundational question about education: Why?

Why are you seeking more education in your life? Or why should you? What is the progress you are trying to make?

When asked, students usually answer that they’re going to college “to get a job.” New America Foundation’s 2015 College Decisions Survey questioned 1,011 U.S. residents ages 16-40 who were either prospective college students or enrolled in their first semester of college.

It never ceases to amaze me how university administrators think they can differentiate standardization (by doing the minimum that accreditors require and calling it “excellence), and then charge a premium for the same product everyone else is offering.

note for young people....and also not so young...but there are also cheap, high quality, accredited, self-paced options out there which allow you to get the academic learning even while you are real world working.

there’s LOTS of options these days. glad to discuss with anyone :)

My daughter started PA school at Marywood in Scranton. It went online due the Covid. She paid cash for her first semester thanks to her duties in the Guard. Anyway, she called me this week and said someone in the office at Marwood took it upon themselves to take out a loan in her name for the semester. Apparently they were not familiar with cash paying customers. She went crazy on them. They retracted the loan. I told her to report them.

Supposedly both Wisconsin-Madison and UC-Santa Barbara are pretty high on the list of party schools.

Well, it’s good to know UCSB’s ranking changed all that much since I went there.

Guys: How easy are the girls there?

Girls: How likely am I to find a soon-to-be-rich husband there?

Unless the student has a track record of finishing what they start, college is a bad investment. Students need to be able to do college level work. My wife and daughter are both high school teachers. Very few of their students have the work ethic and study skills to do well. College is a very expensive place to “find yourself.” The statistics for completion of a four year program on time are abysmally low. A student can accumulate a lot of debt and not earn a degree.

Good for you! I have a son-in-law in the Guard who’s finally on track to finish his degree. He had some terrible academic and financial aid counseling early in his college experience at two different universities.

It’s good to hear that your daughter’s standing up to them. Thanks for the encouraging word.
