After the recent riots which saw multiple large stores looted, some retailers are having second thoughts about remaining in certain cities.
In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been talking to these retailers and asking them not to leave the city.
Not only do these companies make it possible for residents to get the things they need, they pay tons of taxes which the city relies on.
WBBM News reports:
TRENDING: Chicago Mayor Now Pleading With Walmart And Other Companies Not To Leave The City
Mayor Lightfoot Pleads With Walmart, Other Retailers To Not Abandon Chicago
Mayor Lightfoot said shes hopeful major retailers will reopen the Chicago stores that were looted or otherwise damaged during protests surrounding George Floyds killing by police in Minnesota. But, shes unsure of one of the biggest.
Mayor Lightfoot said she was on a conference call with Walmart and other major retailers that had stores looted or heavily damaged during the unrest in Chicago. She said she pleaded with them to not abandon Chicago.
“I think in the case of Walmart, what they were focused on was assessing the damage. They are doing an effort to donate fresh produce, to the extent of what’s left so it doesn’t perish, and other perishables, and they are taking their time, as I would expect.”
Who can blame these companies if they leave the cities?
The same thing is happening in Minneapolis:
The cities hit by riots will be damaged by it for a long time.

They would be insane to stay. I would tell these mayors you wouldnt provide the very basics of government in protection of me, my employees and my business/property WITH a police department standing around watching me be attacked, looted and burned dow. Do you honestly think Im going to rebuild, even if I could with NO police department! No Beetlejuice, Ill not sink another penny into your 3rd world city.

I thought WalMart was not allowed within Chicago city limits due to a union fight or something.
Maybe I am misrememberizing but it seems I read that a few years ago.

I think that’s pretty insensitive of you to post a picture of Groot instead of the mayor.

Those big box stores probably lose more to shoplifting than they make. Besides, Kim Foxx isn’t even prosecuting shoplifting anymore.

I remember something to the effect they usually prefer outside city limits, as big city taxes can be higher than the outlying county’s.

They’ll probably do a deal where Walmart gets a tax break until all the damage is paid for.

Walmart may have little choice in not coming back. Even if self-insured, it's one thing to cover property, it's another to cover personal injury. Walmart is very fortunate no employee got hurt in these riots.
Also at issue is that many items sold in a store are on consignment where the display is stocked by the vendor and the store doesn't take ownership of it until the Point Of Sale transaction. It's seamless to the customer; you pick out an item, walk to the register, and in the same transaction Walmart buys it from the vendor and then sells it to you.
Many of those vendors aren't going to take that risk even if Walmart is.
