‘How Could the CDC Make That Mistake?’
The Atlantic ^ | May 21, 2020 | ALEXIS C. MADRIGAL and ROBINSON MEYER

Posted on 05/21/2020 2:24:29 PM PDT by CheshireTheCat

The government’s disease-fighting agency is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies. Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, and other states are doing the same.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conflating the results of two different types of coronavirus tests, distorting several important metrics and providing the country with an inaccurate picture of the state of the pandemic. We’ve learned that the CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake: combining test results that diagnose current coronavirus infections with test results that measure whether someone has ever had the virus. The upshot is that the government’s disease-fighting agency is overstating the country’s ability to test people who are sick with COVID-19. The agency confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral and antibody tests, even though the two tests reveal different information and are used for different reasons.

Sad. this is a defunct bureaucracy that has only made things worse over the last 6 months. Should be dissolved.

Bloviator, meet Strawman

Nobody’s claming that an aggregated test count is driving any actions. It’s theatre. This writer sets that up as his thesis than smashes it. Strawman fallacy.

Real understanding of testing program management requires discussion of different venues, purposes, goals, all kinds of testing. Vulnerables surveillance, random antibody sampling. Point-of-care testing of symptomatic people, etc., etc.

Nobody reports on this. Because complicated. So they report an aggregated count. So what.

So much of the government does not do what it says it does.

A lot of it is a jobs program for people with advanced degrees. You can’t expect people like that to collect welfare. So instead, you make them a civil servant, you ask them to do next to nothing, and you send them a check.

Said we could open up the country now. I think that is right, because now is the time to open up, months ago better, but now opening the country is right.

There are a lot of CDC “managers, i.e. decision makers” there who are not medically trained and not even biologically trained! It has been allowed to evolve into a paper shuffling enterprise.

FN had a sort segment earlier this week, May 17, 2020, about what CDC does with its funding. My takeaway is that Congress Pelosi uses CDC as a front-end for all kinds of vote-buying spending unrelated to CDC mission.

No wonder CDC was caught off guard with pandemic.

Note that PDJT has indicated that pandemic has given him opportunity to rebuild FDC, CDC, medical support and drug manufacturing industries like he has rebuilt military.

Send "Orange Man Bad" federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!

Supporting PDJT with a new patriot Congress and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping SARS-CoV-2 will effectively give fast-working Trump a "third term" in office imo.

Testing is nothing more than “case harvesting” unless applied to a specific purpose or group. Examples - test patients prior to surgery, test a workplace such as a meat processing plant, or also nursing homes.

10500 + of those highly paid assholes and they are just getting around to determining whether this virus can be spread by surface contact? Since these are our employees I would like to see the daily itinerary for the last 90 days of each of the 10500+! I think it’s time, long overdue, to clean house!

And of course, remember that prior to this disaster, the CDC was involved in such PC things, outside of real epidemiology, as studies of gun violence when allowed. Maybe they still are.

So if their conflation of diagnostic and antibody test counts is genuinely consequential, you have to remember that they drifted from just the epidemiological mission long ago.
