i.e. Don't try to secretly convert any family members away from Judaism or Christianity, on pain of death. Not sure if it applies between Judaism and Christianity because it's the same book in both religions but don't argue with God. Also prior to that is a warning not to be enticed to worship other (i.e. false) gods by prophets working miracles (aka "wonders" in translation), and btw put those supposed prophets to death. This was the supposed crime of Jesus, but since it was obvious he was not trying to convince people to worship a different god, the Jewish court tried to foist him off on the Romans for treason. They probably assumed no matter what happened the Romans would execute him, even if just to keep the peace.
The age of the Internet has revealed the wealth of scholarship surrounding biblical study. Commentary on Deuteronomy is very interesting, so much that your one reference had me reading through annotations and translations for half an hour.

Just as a point of information, what was the exact name of the course he was teaching? I can not seem to find it. “World Politics” seems like an excessively broad sort of title for a course.
