Overall U.S. death rate is at a multi-year LOW
Behind The Black ^ | April 18, 2020 | Robert Zimmerman

Despite the panic over the Wuhan virus, it now appears that the overall U.S. death rate this winter season is at a multi-year low, no worse than 2014, 2016, and 2019, and far better than 2015, 2017, and 2018 (when we were hit with one of the worst flu seasons in years).

Not if you also count the deaths of thousands of small businesses, restaurants and our personal liberties.

A little bit of personal hygiene goes a long way.

When you’re staying at home doing nothing there’s less chance for all kinds of ways to die. But wait until people can’t take this chit anymore. The death rate will spike.

At least they are alive to try again.

Those deaths are where they usually are--in the figment of editors who know that death and disaster sell. GOOD news is SNOOZE news.
But, then, you know that, SJ

No elective surgery so no death by medical misadventure.

Back when I was a hormone overdosed teenager, with occasional access to my dad’s car and a license to cruise for young girls, I was trying to see how fast my dad’s car would go and trying to convince young ladies to go parking with me. It was the early sixties and I had never seen a seatbelt outside of an airplane and in America, 50,000 people a year were killed in automobile accidents at a time that the America had half the population of today.. The butcher’s bill was regreted, but no one, especially me, gave no thought to dial back reduce the America’s love affair with the automobile.

But, back then, neither me or the Democrat Party was trying to overthrow the President of the United States. No matter what the evential death rate will be with Coronavirus virus, it will not be anywhere close to the automobile deaths of the sixties, not to mention the Vietnam War. These numbers only count with respect to the last ditch effort to get rid of the President. These deaths are no doubt a great tragedy, but the blame needs to pointed at the Chinese Communist Government, not at Trump. And, by the way, who in America the best friend of China? Biden.

Outside or more suicides, more domestic abuse, more killings inside homes instead of killing them outside, you may have a point.
People being stuck at home doesn’t miraculously change a nasty brutal killer into a gentle loving husband. If anything it makes him worse.

Tdhe panic over CoVid-19 caused people to social distance themselves, which certainly acted to cause a drop in ALL infectious diseases. It also contributed to LESS OUTDOOR ACCIDENTS which includes car accidents.

Out of the top causes of death in America ( heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc), none of them is infectious.
As for accidents, of course the number of accidents inside homes, especially for old folks will go up right now.

Overall U.S. death rate is at a multi-year LOW

Also true in areas when doctors go on strike.

Frankly, I am surprised the death rate this year is lower than 2016 2017 and 2018.
Remember, the lockdowns started after the middle of March for the most part, so we already had two and a half months of “normal” before lockdowns started.
Then came all these big coronavirus deaths touted by the media every day. You’d have thought total deaths would be higher.

“At least they are alive to try again.”

These days it’s not difficult to spot the posts from people who do not own a restaurant or small business.

To some degree COVID-19 is merely taking people who were going to die this year anyway and condensed their deaths into a compressed time frame.

Even Andrew Cuomo is basically saying that the people who have died are the ones we could not have saved.

yes and people do not get that the suicide rate is rising.

Suicides are already the #10 leading cause of death in the U.S., almost 48,000. . Every 1% increase in unemployment results in thousands more committing suicide. ( medical journal Lancet). I can tell you that suicide intervention centers are getting more calls in 72 hours than we usually see in 3 months. For a concise analysis see the following excerpt below that estimates an increase from suicide and drugs of 70,000 this is from

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/04/13/shutdown_could_kill_more_americans_than_covid-19_142934.html

No model or guesswork is required to foresee the deadly impact. Job losses cause extreme suffering. Every 1% hike in the unemployment rate will likely produce a 3.3% increase in drug overdose deaths and a 0.99% increase in suicides according to data provided by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the medical journal Lancet. These are facts based on experience, not models. If unemployment hits 32%, some 77,000 Americans are likely to die from suicide and drug overdoses as a result of layoffs. Scientists call these fatalities deaths of despair.
Then add the predictable deaths from alcohol abuse caused by unemployment. Health economist Michael French from the University of Miami and a co-author found a “significant association between job loss” and binge drinking and alcoholism.

The impact of layoffs goes beyond suicide, drug overdosing and drinking. Overall, the death rate for an unemployed person is 63% higher than for someone with a job, according to findings in Social Science & Medicine.

Do tell.
I made my choice a LONG time ago that I didn't want to have to depend on "the kindness of strangers." I got a job that had a steady income and a decent retirement.

I feel badly for them but they made their choices as well. There is a very good income for owning a business or restaurant but they knew the risks.

We all have choices.

When I was young women didn't HAVE many choices at all. I know that I didn't. They managed. So did I.
