In the UK Asian refers to geography, Including the Middle East.

They also use the term Chinese - referring to country of origin or ethnicity.

IMO - this practice purposefully hides the truth.

Actually, “Asian” refers exclusively to Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, and Sri Lankans - especially Pakistani Muslims:
