It was cowpox being transmitted to milkmaids that gave rise to the smallpox vaccine.
Yes, one might even say that (contrary to Bernie Sanders’ statements on the subject today) teaching EVERYONE to read is not necessarily a good thing. It gives some people more confidence in their own stupidity.

Exactly!! I noticed that too!! The point was that the milkmaids were the only population who seemed IMMUNE to smallpox due to exposure to cow pox, harmless and asymptomatic in humans. This led to the vaccine!
