Can we teach ourselves to talk with each other again?
The current toxic politics threatens to engulf us all.

As theatre it was amazing. Their jobs are to represent differing ideas in competition. Maybe that makes these actions OK as symbols of how passionate they are. What do Free Republic people think?

Can we restore civility?

Jefferson called Adams an "HERMAPHRODITE" ( "girlieman" handn't been thought up yet ), wrote nasty op-eds and pamphlets about him and others; some under his name, others under nome de plumes, and had henchemen do whisper campaigns against his "enemies".
And he wasn't the only one!
In the 1850s, a Representative attacked a Senator, with his cane, on the floor of the Senate.
During the election season of 1952, the Dems started a whispering campaign that Mamie Eisenhower was a CLOSET DRUNK; of all things.
Want more examples of incivility? I know lots of them.
Why say this to us as if we had anything whatsoever to do with it? You think that the belligerent democrats are listening?
so is the change which has happened not an increase in incivility but an increase in hypersensitivity to perceived incivility?
The hags and their illegitimate sons are trying to collide with us in traffic. There will be no civility, until they are all severely punished.

What I just wrote above is objective truth. There is no disputing it. It is a fact. Like gravity.
But because I stated this simple objective truth to the democrats I am an evil person and my life should be made a living hell. There will even be those who would call for me to be killed.
If you can be nice to people who advocate that then I question your moral sense.
Secondly, yes, the Millenial ( and aged people too ) SJWs and abhorrent snowflakes need to grow up and stop acting like toddlers with severe cases of "the terrible twos"!

OTOH...not all THAT long ago, in the scheme of things, people were more mannerly, most never swore nor said anything "blue" in front of children and teens, and yes, those times were better.
You can but the blame on the damned HIPPIES for the rending of civility, polite discourse, and traditional good manners. And technology has made it much worse...as has the almost complete abrogation of most parents, re raising kids, of the past couple of generations.
Civility is a two-way street.
If somebody accuses you of rape, falsely, and continues to harass you, lie about you, and commit false witness against you, is there a chance for civility while that behavior is ongoing?
Another analogy is while one country is committing War against your country, are you obliged to be civil to members of the warring countries armies?
What do you think is going on right now in our country?
This line of reasoning makes the person arguing for is sound like an amoral, effeminate member of the Establishment RINOs, not a conservative.
