Flight shaming is gaining traction and could cost airlines billions

Consumers are paying more attention to their carbon footprint and it could cost airlines billions of dollars, Citi said in a note to clients Tuesday.

The firm said that "flight shaming," which it defines as "the inherent guilt that an individual feels as a result of one's aviation-related carbon footprint" is causing consumers to explore alternative modes of transportation when possible and to look for ways to offset their carbon emissions.

Citi estimates that over the next five years the cost of carbon offsetting economy flights will grow to $3.8 billion per year. It will either be absorbed by the consumer or the airline. But really the airline gets hit in both scenarios since if the price is absorbed by passengers the higher cost could lead to an overall slowdown in air travel.

"If this burden were to be fully absorbed by the consumer, our price elasticity analysis shows that there would be a shortfall in volume growth of -0.4% per annum vs. current forecasts. And while this does not sound detrimental, if this onus were to fall on the (largely fixed cost base) airlines, the cost of carbon offsetting all leisure consumption could be as much as c.27% of airlines' profits by 2025," analysts led by Mark Manduca wrote.

Just take the train to Hawaii like Rep. Alexandria Occasio-Cortez recommends.

More BS. I doubt the airlines hardly notice any difference if any at all.

“To pass the cost along to consumers airlines may take creative approaches in an effort to shame customers.

“We hypothesize that some airlines will ‘reward’ customers who choose to offset their carbon footprint by granting them a green seat on an aircraft. Meanwhile, customers who do not offset will be allocated a red one and placed into a state of ‘shame,’” the firm said.

Oh, EFF OFF!! Shaming your customers is REALLY going to set me off when I fly. Seriously!!

My global-warming believing brother flies all over the world on vacations and short visits. We don’t get into it anymore - but I’ll have to keep this in mind just in case.

No one I know is falling for this scam. In the family my kid has flown over 40 times this year on business I’ve flown about 20 - not business

How about fat shaming? I just got home and almost every one of my flights had obese people oozing onto me and crushing me in my seat.

I don’t fly. Not because I give a flying fornication about phony carbon footprint BS. I don’t fly simply because flying sucks. The couple of times a year I have to fly for work I grin and bear it. You just have to dedicate an entire day each way. If you’re lucky nothing gets lost or canceled. For personal travel I take my motorcycle, car, or diesel truck - and burn whatever amount of fossil fuels is necessary.

This might have greater success in Europe, where there is greater conformity on Climate Change. Although we have our share of Climate Wacko-Birds in the states too.

The ONLY reason I do not fly nearly as much as I used to is the aggravation associated with boarding, service animals, smaller seating, and baggage claim. It has absolutely nothing to do with the global warming, I mean climate change shame.

I would suggest this...TSA’s tactics are making people reconsider flights more than ‘flight shaming’. If I were going from one location to another, within a day’s drive...then I’d probably drive instead of flying.

If they put me in a red seat I should be able to smoke again since I’d be self-admitting that I don’t care about my carbon footprint. And I could fart to my heart’s content too!

TSA has done more to stymie air travel than “flight shaming” ever could.
