Ever since I began my research on birth control side effects and health consequences for my book In the Name of the Pill, I have been shocked to learn how many women have not been properly warned about the real risks involved with taking factory-made steroids.
A colleague of mine who I discuss these issues with said he often gets into discussions with women about these health risks, and I noticed that many of the conversations he was telling me about had happened online. So I couldnt help but ask him, How are you meeting so many women online? He said it was mostly from Facebook groups.
I was intrigued, so I began searching for a group related to birth control side effects. I joined one with several thousand members. My primary goal was to see what types of side effects women were discussing. I wanted to know what their biggest concerns were and also see if I might have overlooked some common complications in my research.
As I scrolled through the archived posts, none of the side effects surprised memigraines, low sex drive, heavy periods, severe cramping
What did surprise me in this Facebook group was how eager the administrators and frequent contributors were to assure the women that there was nothing to worry about. No matter how alarming the side effect, they would chime in with responses like Sounds perfectly normal to me and Just give your body time to adjust.
When serious side effects get brushed under the rug
I maintained my low profile for only about two-and-a-half days. Thats when I saw a post from a young woman with a rare connective tissue autoimmune disease. After getting the NuvaRing, she had noticed substantial changes in her disease symptoms . . .

another surprise
Thank you for posting. It’s not just the PHYSICAL side effects which are of concern, but the moral and spiritual — even within ‘stable’ marriages.
The ‘dark side’ of birth control is a frontier all too neglected among the medical world, but also in the Christian world. Not enough dialogue has been had, but I predict this will change in coming years and you will see more people of faith reject birth control.
World health organization has birth control pills estrogen as a class 1 carcinogen
Can cause breast cancer
Class 1.
No one will talk about that.
Is that clear?
Because, deep down,it's contrary to women's best interests to have a normal, natural, fully-functioning body.
Because being a woman is loaded with natural liabilities. The more you can nullify the inherent glitches of being a woman, the more you can live as a full human being.
Because woman =/= human.
Thus say the best thinkers of our age.
Did I say that right, tax-chick?
I really fear I'll suffer the fate of Jonathan Swift. Oh yeah. That's right. We could have baked Irish baby with a nice Yorkshire pudding. Good point.
Moral and spiritual side effects from taking birth control? Were not discussing abortions. I agree that hormones can cause issues. But, have never in my 54 years have heard of anyone (not a single person) feeling or thinking theres something morally or spiritually upsetting about it.
I had a tubal at 19. There were medical issues that necessitated that decision, and my hysterectomy when I was 29.
I’ve been on more contraceptives since 16 than I can count, off and on, and I was always diligent about researching them and discussing side-effects with my doctors. I do the same with any medication that I’m started on, regardless of what it’s for.
It’s a huge problem that people aren’t proactive about researching their medications. A quick trip to drugs.com or a call to your pharmacist and you can find out almost anything, and weigh your options from there.
Clarification : Can cause physical issues.
Are you on tacro? I took that for a year as well for my sct.
That is actually the primary reason more and more Christians are speaking up. Even against methods with few side effects like condoms.
If interested in the dialogue surrounding the moral/spiritual ramifications - a good starting point is this lecture at Notre Dame University given by Mary Eberstadt. Sociologist and writer of the book Adam and Eve After The Pill
In general, I think its safe to say that our medical and pharmaceutical options are more limited than they would have been had the the entire OB/GYN establishment not been built around The Pill/contraception these last 50 years.
Not enough genuine effort and research has been put into ways of addressing reproductive health in a way that honors womens natural fertility and procreative dimensions first and foremost.
Got a pimple? Take The Pill!
Cramps? The Pill!
Mood gotcha down? The Pill!
Etc...etc..
All birth-control is evil
however the most evil forms of birth control are the pill and condoms
Thank you. Ill play it.
Why would you think this?
Why do you feel those are the 2 most evil over say, iud or a diaphragm?
Exasperating. truly.
Ive always wondered why vegans (not all, but the cultic ones) havent realized the contradiction in advocating for their diet while ascribing to a contraceptive lifestyle? So contradictory. And...unnatural.
That sounds pretty accurate.
feminist birth control = their face
Actually, abortion is the most evil form of birth control, hands down. Nothing else is even close.
Do you mean that you don’t feel sexual desire towards women who disagree with you on significant points of philosophy and public policy? How convenient for the women!
