My wifi data usage for September more than doubled. After an investigation, I traced it to the PBS app I downloaded to my Amazon Fire TV that month in order to watch the Country Music documentary. That PBS app was using more than all my other apps on Fire TV put together despite the fact I spent at least 10 times as long watching YouTube videos.
So can any techie type out there explain WHY the PBS app used so much data? In fact, I suspect that the PBS app was using data even when I wasn't watching the PBS shows. My problem was quickly resolved when I uninstalled that PBS app and my data usage is back to normal. But I am still curious as to why the PBS app was sucking up so much data. WHY???
Why don’t you just turn the app off from running in background? If it allows it..
I uninstalled it. Problem...SOLVED!!!
That’s funny, because my WiFi data doubled in Sept also.
I traced mine (I think) to Amazon Music all of a sudden allowing streaming on all network connection types instead of just WiFi only like it usually is. Have no idea how that happened. Since turning it off, I’m hardly using any, just as it used to be.
Did you have a high-resolution setting for PBS? Most Youtube videos are pretty low-res so low bandwidth. PBS might be sending you 4K videoes.
Defund PBS.
For giggles read what the new PBS Ombudsman thinks of conservatives. What a screed.

But even when I wasn’t watching I was getting high data usage.
How do you determine which fire tv apps are using the most data? Does the device keep track of this?
Good question. Go into your fire tv settings. Then into preferences and then go to data usage. You find out there. I found out how to do this by looking it up on the Web.
BTW, since uninstalling that PBS app, the percentage of my Fire TV data usage dropped from 57% to just 22%.
My home internet data is unlimited.
Nevertheless, I do not like what it is doing.
Deleted and thanks!
PBS sucks, period. No need for further details.
Thanks.
Can I just state the obvious: This is no surprise considering PBS is like the govt’s own propaganda channel. If you are watching it on a smart TV, no doubt it is also watching you. Glad you found it and thanks for the warning!
Yeah, I read until he said that PBS was the most balanced of any news broadcast. Yukk.
Probably like the rest of the government it is a bloated pig that is inefficient as hell. Think the 0dumbo Care website.
Not much reason to mine your Fire TV info. Even though the remote is capable of mic access the fact that there are two tiny AAA batteries in it and it lasts a long time they don’t have it doing far field data collection. Other than that I see no other very useful info they could collect through Fire TV.
Because it was running in the background.
Anybody that uses an app from a marxist-front organization deserves to get everything sucked up...
Someone on my YouTube channel posted that PBS was probably using my data to ease the load on their servers. Is that even LEGAL????
When that happens, is the PBS app the last one you used?
I always take my firestick to “home” before going back to other TV to be sure it isn’t left on something that automatically goes on to the next item in the queue.
Since the firestick turns off automatically w/o use and can’t be turned off via the remote, my thought was that I should get it to a ‘static’ mode before abandoning it.
