Home Defense: 5 Tactics To Prevent an Intruder
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 9/25/2019 | R Douglas

There's more to it than Bang Bang for Home Defense - There are roughly 2.5 million burglaries a year — 66% of those being home break-ins. That translates to one burglary every 13 seconds. So don't be surprised if one day an armed robber with an AR-10 scope attached decides to break into your home. But here’s the good news:
You can significantly lower the possibility of a home invasion. How? By following these 5 proven tactics I mention below. Let’s get started.

Security Cameras
Let's start with the obvious: Security Cameras. If a robber sees cameras set up around your property, they’ll most likely move right past your house onto an easier target. The reason? Proper security cameras monitor and record activity outside your home 24/7. That’s why homes without a security system are 300% more likely to be burglarized. Not only do security cameras monitor activity, but most modern systems have features like:
● An Alarm System – Some security cameras come with an alarm system. If the alarm system is armed and the cameras detect an intruder attempting to break a window or door, it’ll automatically sound an alarm (and even notify local authorities).
● Motion Detection – Someone snooping around on your property? The cameras will most likely pick up the motion and send an alert to you via email and smartphone.
● Mobile Remote Viewing – Allows you to view the cameras anywhere, anytime, at the tip of your fingers. Pretty cool, right?
In short: If you don’t have security cameras set up, you should invest in some. It’ll help prevent burglars and vandals from tampering with your property. Now, arming your home with security cameras (and an alarm system) is a great place to start. However, a layered approach offers even more protection. That’s why I recommend to…

Reinforce Exterior Doors
I never realized how easy it is to kick open a door until I tried it myself. Teaming up with a couple of security experts, we set up demonstration doors — the same doors most houses use. On average, it took around two to three kicks to break the door open.
It’s no wonder 65 percent of break-ins occur by barging in either through the front, back or garage door. That’s when I realized I should reinforce all my exterior doors. And that’s exactly what I did with three simple (and proven) lock reinforcements: Read the rest of home defense tactics.

Is that an AR-10 scope in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

A dog is also a major deterrent because you can’t predict what it will do. One of my friends had a de-scented skunk (illegal now) that he let roam on the property. It loved to greet people. Good deterrent.

My dog has really been a great asset in many ways. Including home security.

My wife is very much like a doe in the woods. She’ll hear everything at night. When she wakes me up because she heard something, dog is the one that lets me know if I can just sink back to sleep or not

Not to mention anyone casing our neighborhood would take one look at dog and move along.

When you begin an 'article' with:

There's more to it than Bang Bang for Home Defense -

Do you really expect to be taken seriously?

Oh, it's 'Am Shooting Journal'. Not to be taken seriously, ever.

I always do my home invasions with “an AR-10 scope attached”.

In the country, a noisy fierce looking/acting German Shepard and a 12 gauge at hand works.

A simple rule I use: don’t signal that you have anything worth taking.

I’ve got all of the items on the list:

Assay Alboy unbumpable deadbolts
Kick resistant internal locks (not possible to open from outside when inside)
Security doors with EZ armor on the frame (which also protects hinges)
Security system hooked to a cell system so the wires can’t be cut
Many cameras
3M security film (4mm) preinstalled on all windows
A simple piece of wood in window tracks so they don’t open
2 highly trained (professionally) Dobermans
Storm doors on all outside doors.
Rose bushes below windows

Solid wood doors with kick proof latch on all bedrooms.

Several firearms at easy disposal. Prefer .357 revolver.

I grew up in Gush Katif (Samaria). We don’t screw around.

Oh, I forgot:

Garage doors are commercial doors, wind rated and much stronger.
I cut the string so you can’t do the simple YouTube trick with the hanger on them. I also installed a metal shield to prevent this, but have little faith in it.

Oh, one more— a pad lock on the attic access port in the garage and a slide lock on the access port into the house from the attic.

● An Alarm System
● Motion Detection
● Mobile Remote Viewing
● Reinforce Exterior Doors

I have all four. And then there are the weapons platforms I have to repel or eliminate anyone who defeats 1 through 4.

We have most of the above, plus this - got sign from a wealthy gun collector who had his collection broken into 3 times - this sign stopped all attempts: photo IMG_7156_zpsq6nb7wgl.jpg

Sign is not bluff - we have a full shooting range on our 15 acres, and steel targets to practice on from our front deck - that overlooks our entrance drive.......

Feel free to copy text on sign at will........

I have an ADT sign as you pull in my driveway.
I bought it off EBAY for $25.

If a robber sees cameras set up around your property, they’ll most likely move right past your house onto an easier target.

If a buyer sees these in a house for sale they'll keep moving right past too. It's a big clue the house has bad neighbors.
